December 4, 2024 – Flagler County advises that motorists who regularly use State Road 11 and County Road 304 to be aware as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced it opened the roundabout configuration today (Wednesday, December 4). While the new roundabout traffic pattern is now operational, FDOT will continue construction on the overall project into next year.

During construction, motorists are advised to use extra caution when traveling through Cody’s Corner. Barrels, signage, and message boards are in place to help guide drivers through the construction work zone, according to FDOT’s news release.

“Vehicles should enter the roundabout by going to the right and continuing counterclockwise,” the release states. “Traffic entering the roundabout must yield to those already present, but drivers should not stop if it is clear to enter.”

The new roundabout is being constructed to improve safety at the rural intersection, which has experienced numerous crashes with fatalities and serious injuries in recent years, according to FDOT.

Both State Road 11 and County Road 304 will remain open to traffic during construction, but single lane closures with flagging operations can be expected throughout the project. Work also includes lighting upgrades, landscaping in the center of the roundabout, new signage, and new pavement markings, the release states.

Upcoming lane closures and project updates will be posted on the FDOT project webpage at https://www.cflroads.com/project/439156-1.

A roundabout is a circular intersection with no traffic signals, where traffic flows in a one-way counterclockwise direction, according to FDOT. Key navigation rules include:

  • Yielding to traffic already in the roundabout
  • Not changing lanes or stopping
  • Signaling before exiting
  • Yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists

“Compared to traditional traffic signals, roundabouts reduce the likelihood by up to 82 percent of crashes, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities,” FDOT states. “Roundabouts also decrease the number of vehicle conflict points where crashes can occur, making the intersection safer for both motorists and pedestrians.”

“When driving through the work zone, stay alert, adhere to the posted work zone speed limit, avoid all distractions, be cautious of shifts in traffic patterns, and give yourself plenty of distance from the driver ahead of you,” FDOT states.
