ORLANDO, Fla.—Surrounded by more than a hundred veterans at a VFW Post in Orlando today, Senator Ashley Moody announced legislation that aims to expand outdoor recreation opportunities for our nation’s veterans. Senator Moody is cosponsoring the Veterans Outdoor Rehabilitation Act, which would establish a grant program to help states provide veterans with additional resources for recovery. The legislation would build on the success of programs like Florida’s Operation Outdoor Freedom, which has served more than 6,800 Florida veterans since 2009.
“Our veterans risked their lives to defend this nation in some of the most dangerous places on earth. When they return home, they deserve every opportunity to build healthy, connected and fulfilling lives. The Veterans Outdoor Rehabilitation Act is one more way we can keep our promise to those who served – by helping them reconnect, rebuild and find healing amongst their community in the country they sacrificed so much to defend,” said Senator Ashley Moody.
BACKGROUND:

The bipartisan Veterans Outdoor Rehabilitation Act would establish a grant program through the Department of Veterans Affairs to help states develop and expand outdoor recreation opportunities for veterans. It would authorize $10 million each year, with every approved state receiving at least $200,000 to support these programs.

The funding would allow states to partner with local outfitters, guides, nonprofit organizations and community groups. It would help cover equipment and program fees – removing barriers that keep some veterans from participating. Veterans would gain access to a wide range of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, archery and target shooting, with adaptive and accessible options for veterans with disabilities.
