For Caroline Johnson and the dedicated team at SMART Dog Rescue, one such moment unfolded along the busy I-95 highway near the St. Augustine Outlet Mall.
What began as a frantic call about a scared, malnourished dog in desperate need of help quickly spiraled into a month-long mission, one that would test the limits of their resolve.
The journey began with a sighting of a female dog, alone and trembling on the side of the highway. The call for help was urgent, as the dog, traumatized by past experiences, was in constant danger from the speeding traffic on I-95.
Her fear was palpable, and any attempt to approach her only sent her running further into hiding. This was no ordinary rescue. This was a dog that had been broken by life, and each encounter with humans seemed to deepen her mistrust.
For Caroline, the founder of SMART Dog Rescue, the idea of this dog suffering alone in such peril was unbearable.
Determined to make a difference, Caroline set out on a relentless mission to find and save the dog. Day after day, she drove up and down the highway, hoping to spot her, setting up traps, deploying cameras, and scouring the area for any sign of the dog. “We worked closely with St. Johns County Animal Control, together had 5 traps set,” said Johnson. “Residents in the community were huge with sightings.”

Caroline’s sleepless nights were filled with worries for the dog’s survival, but she refused to give up. Her commitment to the mission was unwavering, her heart fully invested in the rescue, and she knew she had to try everything possible to bring this dog to safety.
After weeks of searching with no success, Caroline decided to focus on a nearby development where the dog had last been spotted.
