PALM COAST, Fla. – Down on their luck or never even having the chance to be lucky yet, animals abandoned to the Flagler Humane Society wait patiently for someone to look their way and deem them lovable.

While the Flagler Humane Society shares their love with countless animals waiting for forever homes, supporters help defray the costs and responsibilities of caring for them.

Hosting the first ever casino night for the shelter, Island Estates families and friends gathered to show their support, netting around $10,000 for the beloved animal shelter.

FHS Director Amy Carotenuto said they’re grateful for every dollar raised, and was happy to see supporters enjoying the new event.

“There are a lot of great animal people here tonight supporting the work that we do,” said Carotenuto.

Longtime supporters Mark and Shayla Gerling were among those in attendance. Happy to help the shelter, the couple, who own Gerling Travel and Surfside Shakes, have opened their hearts to charitable causes for decades.

“It’s a community effort. We’ve always been blessed with community, our business was built on community,” said Mark Gerling. “We’ve tried to be involved in as many ways as possible.”

Dr. Heather Rogers, Dr. Carrie Coffey – Salty Paws

Even when enjoying time outside of the office, Salty Paws Animal Hospital doctors Heather Rogers and Carrie Coffey, said it’s still all about the animals.

“As a nonprofit organization I think that they have an obligation to do fundraisers. You can’t spend money if you don’t make money and without the generous donations of the community, they would be able to do nothing,” said Dr. Rogers.

“From an awareness level I think the community doesn’t realize all the good the Humane Society does. As a member of the community and they come to us and they’re struggling with something, looking for a new pet, can’t afford vaccines, can’t afford to spay or neuter their pet, these are all services the Humane Society offers. I think, just to bring that awareness to the community is super important, and events like this really help with that,” she said.
