BUNNELL, Fla. — Flagler County honored the sacrifices of America’s combat-wounded veterans on Monday, Aug. 3, as the Board of County Commissioners proclaimed Aug. 7, 2026, as Purple Heart Day and recognized August as Purple Heart Month in Flagler County.

The proclamation was accepted by Charlie Hanger, a Purple Heart recipient who was medically retired from the U.S. Army after being wounded during the Vietnam War.

“First of all, I want to thank every commissioner present for all the great work you’ve done for the veterans in our community,” Hanger said. “I am proud to be a veteran in Flagler County because I know we care, and I know we are cared for.”

Accepting the proclamation on behalf of fellow Purple Heart recipients, Hanger reflected on the shared sacrifice of those who have served.

“We’re just here to represent all those who some of them who gave the most, some gave less, but everybody gave what they had and what was needed for our country,” he said.  “I will gladly and honorably accept this proclamation. I think it is good and proper, and I appreciate all the work you’ve done here.”

The proclamation recognizes the Purple Heart as the nation’s oldest military decoration, first established by General George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782, and revived in 1932. Today, it honors members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were wounded or killed in enemy action.

It also acknowledges Flagler County’s designation as a Purple Heart Community since 2018 and recognizes the contributions of local Purple Heart recipients who continue to serve the community.

Following the proclamation, David Lydon, Flagler County Veterans Services Officer, introduced Sean Myers, who began his first day as the county’s newest veterans service counselor.

A retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sergeant, Myers will help veterans and their families access the benefits and services they have earned.

The proclamation and introduction highlighted Flagler County’s ongoing commitment to recognizing the sacrifices of veterans while strengthening the support available to those who have served.
