As the school year hits the home stretch in Flagler County, the district continues to make headlines across the Sunshine State. This week, our Flagler Schools Employee of the Year, James Sorrentino, and Old Kings Elementary School are racking up the hardware for the district’s trophy case.
Earlier this week, the Florida Department of Education officially announced that Sorrentino, a Buddy Taylor Middle School advisor, is one of five finalists for the state’s Employee of the Year award. Sorrentino, along with Flagler Schools Teacher of the Year, Allison Kucharski of Rymfire Elementary School, were honored most recently at the Teacher and Employee of the Year Gala at Channel Side, March 25.
The winner of Florida’s Employee of the Year award, as well as the list of finalists for Florida’s Teacher of the Year award, are yet to be announced.
The honors continued statewide for the district as all eyes were on the Owls Nest this week, as well, as the State Board of Education (SBE) announced Old Kings Elementary School (OKES) is now a “School of Excellence.”
The announcement came at the SBE’s most recent Board Meeting in Tallahassee. The School of Excellence designation is achieved when a school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for schools composed of the same grade groupings for at least two of the last three school years.
OKES is one of only 88 schools statewide to be newly designated as a School of Excellence. Congratulations to OKES faculty, staff and students for achieving this outstanding honor that is truly proving Flagler Schools is continuing to move #FlaglerForward.
