Palm Coast – The City of Palm Coast hosted another incredibly successful Tunnel to Towers 5K event at Central Park in Town Center on Saturday, February 1st. The event brought together 304 registered participants from ages 7 to 88 and was organized to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s mission of honoring first responders and military service members.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation was formed in 2001 by Frank Siller, brother of Stephen Siller, who was among the 343 first responders killed in New York City on the morning of September 11, 2001. Since its inception, the organization has been committed to helping families of fallen veterans, first responders, and catastrophically injured service members by providing mortgage-free homes.

Through the combined efforts of our community, the event has raised over $55,000 in the past three years. Saturday’s most recent contribution of over $20,000 highlights Palm Coast’s steadfast commitment to supporting the brave individuals who serve our nation.

Individuals such as Bryan McMahon, John Johnston, and Fredrick Gleissner showcased remarkable dedication by raising $1,325, $855, and $570, respectively. Their outstanding contributions exemplify the generosity and compassion that define our city.

Additionally, we extend our gratitude to the teams who united for this cause. “Team No Judge” led the fundraising efforts with $1,550, followed by “FDNY Gone South” with $860 and “Roger ‘Papa’ Thibault” with $415.

Before the race, a ceremony featuring the Palm Coast Honor Guard and remarks from Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill, Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin, and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly was held. The ceremony’s highlight was Chief Kyle Berryhill’s presentation of the esteemed ‘Follow the Footsteps Award’ to Former Chief & Palm Coast Volunteer Fire Rescue Vice President Howard Peiffer in recognition of his lifetime commitment to public service.

“This event continues to grow and bring the community together each year for a great cause as we run, walk, and honor our nation’s bravest and remember those who have sacrificed so much,” said Patrick Appolonia, the event organizer who also works in the Communications & Marketing Department. “Those who serve our country and protect our communities are from all backgrounds, all walks of life, and I feel there is something especially uniting in knowing that and seeing the support year after year.”

The City of Palm Coast extends heartfelt thanks to all participants, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who made the 2024 Tunnel to Towers 5K event a success!
