Two Reckless Drivers Arrested After Fleeing From Deputies

On Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls about a reckless driver on A1A. Deputy Wilkinson observed the driver driving southbound on A1A at approximately 91MPH. Deputy Wilkinson activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, however, it continued to drive recklessly and pass vehicles. Deputy Wilkinson disengaged and notified the Flagler Beach Police Department to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

The vehicle continued south on A1A, passing a Flagler Beach Officer who also made attempts to stop the vehicle. The driver continued to drive recklessly, ultimately causing a three-vehicle crash in front of the Flagler Beach Pier. Due to the extent of the suspect’s injuries, FHP was notified and responded to conduct the crash investigation.

The driver, Andrew Mintz, was transported to a local hospital and several charges have been forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for their review.

On Sunday, Deputy Fowler observed a blue dirt bike traveling north on US1 with no tag. Deputy Fowler activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the dirt bike, which fled at a high rate of speed. Deputy Fowler did not pursue. A citizen flagged down Deputy Fowler and advised him the dirt bike went south on Belle Terre Parkway from Matanzas Woods Parkway. While checking the area, another citizen informed Deputy Schmidt of the address where the reckless driver was believed to reside.

Contact was made with Erick Javier Guzman-Sarmiento at the address, and Deputy Fowler was able to identify the dirt bike and Guzman-Sarmiento as the subject that fled. Guzman-Sarmiento was arrested for Fleeing/Eluding with Lights and Siren, Reckless Driving, Failure to Register a Motor Vehicle, and No Florida Driver’s License. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later released after posting $3,400 bond.

“Thank you to the citizens for Seeing Something and Saying Something,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “They helped us apprehend his guy and keep this reckless driver off our streets.”
