Ahoy, folks! Captain Adam Morley here, coming to you from Genung’s Fish Camp, with this week’s fishing report for Flagler News Weekly. Now, if there’s anything that stirs up a good fishing story, it’s the kind of week we’ve been having on these waters! There’s a little something biting for everyone, no matter where you’re dropping a line.
Let me start with a shout-out to my wife, Janine, who has been out there in her trusty canoe, pulling in some beautiful redfish and trout. She’s been drifting through those quiet backwaters, working the flats, and just about every time she gets back, she’s got a story about another good one that got hooked. There’s something special about those cool autumn mornings, the mist hanging low, and the redfish waking up hungry, ready to chase down a well-presented lure or bait. Janine’s been absolutely nailing it, and it’s no fluke. Those redfish and trout reports are ringing true for folks all along Matanzas River from the backwaters to the Inlet.
Out there in the surf, it’s been a busy week for the shore-bound anglers. Surf fishermen have been having some success with pompano and big, hefty whiting. There’s been a nice push of pompano coming in along the coast—just the right time to get out there with some fresh sand fleas or clams. And let me tell you, there’s nothing like the fight of a pompano, those silvery streaks flipping and turning in the waves, giving anglers a good run for their money. These fish are fighters and make for some of the finest table fare around, which has the shore fishermen grinning ear to ear.
The whiting have been on the larger side, too—nice, solid catches that are making for good eating and great stories. The recent conditions seem to have stirred up just the right mix to bring them in close to shore, where they’re easy pickings for those casting out with lighter tackle. This kind of variety, from the backwaters all the way out to the surf, has really brought some excitement to our fishing community this week.
Whether you’re paddling around in a canoe, like Janine, looking for those reds and trout, or casting from the beach hoping for a pompano or whiting, it’s the perfect time to get out there and take advantage of all that St. Augustine’s waters have to offer. The bite is on, and I’m willing to bet there are more stories to be made before the week’s out.
So grab your rods, get your bait, and maybe swing by Genung’s if you need some last-minute tackle or just want to swap a few fish tales. Until next time, tight lines and good luck out there!
