Hey there, Flagler News Weekly readers! Captain Adam Morley here, owner of Genung’s Fish Camp and The Inlet Beach and General Store at Matanzas Inlet. Between the busy season and battling a summer cold, I haven’t been able to get out on the water as much as I’d like. Chris from Skinny Water Lures has been in Orlando for iCast this past week and will be back with his report next week. So, this week’s fishing report comes from the stories and tips I’ve heard from anglers visiting the shop.
The water is HOT, from the ocean to the creeks, and that’s been leading to lots of catfish and stingrays. Despite my downtime, I did manage to help out a friend with some advice that paid off big time. I suggested they fish the edge of the ICW in the channel where the water is deeper and slightly cooler. Using live finger mullet, they managed to catch their limit of nice redfish within 20 minutes.
The snook and tarpon reports have been exploding recently with the warm water. I was invited to a dock with lights one night and saw dozens of snook just chilling under the lights, with a massive school of redfish hanging out at the next dock over. If you’re set up for night fishing, targeting dock lights is a great way to escape the heat of the day and find some action.
Live shrimp might be small this time of year, but that’s no problem—big fish eat small shrimp too. Just make sure you’re using the right size hook and gear for the bait you’ve got. Mangrove Snapper have been thick, and the live shrimp available at the shops are the perfect size for them.
So, good luck out there, enjoy the weekend, and stay hydrated! Tight lines, everyone!
