FCSO: Fugitive’s Flight Runs Aground After Citizen Lends FCSO Deputies a Canoe

BUNNELL, Fla. — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an out-of-county fugitive after deputies located her in the southeastern corner of the county and borrowed a citizen’s canoe to safely bring her into custody.

On the afternoon of Sept. 17, deputies responded to a self-storage business on Airport Road in Ormond Beach to assist with a trespass. Upon deputies’ arrival, a woman fled into a nearby wooded area. Deputies identified the woman as Tiffani Driggers, 28, and determined she had an active fugitive arrest warrant from Walton County for felony violation of probation. FCSO deputies, the K-9 Unit, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit searched the area, receiving assistance from Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputies and VSO’s Air One helicopter. However, they could not immediately locate her.

Later that evening, a resident on Windsong Court — near the earlier trespassing call — reported hearing a woman calling for help from a wooded peninsula. Deputies responded and made voice contact with the woman, who they quickly determined to be Driggers, across the canal. Driggers told deputies she was exhausted, unable to cross the water, and may have injured her ankle.

Deputies requested the FCSO Marine Unit and additional deputies to assist but a nearby homeowner offered deputies the use of a canoe to reach Driggers. Two deputies crossed the canal, located Driggers, and brought her back across the water in the canoe. After she was evaluated by Volusia County Fire Rescue, deputies took her into custody.

“This is exactly what guardianship policing looks like,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “A citizen who ‘Saw Something and Said Something’ lead to deputies locating a wanted fugitive. A separate citizen saw deputies needed a way across the water and handed them two paddles and a canoe. Whether it takes a patrol car, K-9, drone, helicopter, or canoe, our deputies will find a way to get the job done. I thank these citizens for helping us bring this search safely back to shore and into the Green Roof Inn.”

Deputies arrested Driggers on her fugitive warrant. She was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she is being held without bond.

Driggers has a lengthy criminal history including, grand theft, possession of controlled substances, giving a false name, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident.
