FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Residents and boaters across Flagler County are celebrating after county officials announced the postponement of the planned dredging project at Bings Landing boat basin until after Labor Day, allowing uninterrupted summer access for recreational and commercial boaters.

The project, originally scheduled to begin June 1, would have closed the boat launch for approximately three weeks during the height of the summer boating season.

In a statement released Tuesday, Flagler County officials said the decision came after discussions with the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND), which supports funding for the project, and after hearing concerns from the local boating community.

“After further consultation with FIND (Florida Inland Navigation District), which is responsible for this project’s funding support, as well as receiving feedback from our local commercial and recreational boating industries, we have decided to postpone the dredging until after Labor Day,” said Interim County Administrator Adam Mengel.

The dredging project is intended to increase the depth of the deepest areas of the basin and improve long-term navigability for boaters using the popular waterfront destination.

Following the announcement, community members quickly took to social media to voice both relief and appreciation for county leaders listening to public feedback.

“Glad to hear the county heard the citizen concerns and shifted to accommodate,” wrote Andrew Werner on the county’s Facebook page announcing the decision. “Good work!”

George Hendrickson praised the power of community involvement, commenting, “Just goes to show what we can accomplish with team work. Wonder if we could curb the overdevelopment next?”

Others expressed surprise that officials reconsidered the timing of the project during the busy summer season.

Rick Kantor added, “Holy cow! Common sense prevails!!”

Carl Wittemann called the move a “Smart Decision!!”

Some boaters also used the opportunity to raise additional concerns regarding boat ramp operations. Nick Cap commented, “Now let’s make less than 15 minute time limit to put your boat in, I mean, if you can’t get it in in five, you have a problem.”

The postponement is expected to preserve summer access for thousands of recreational boaters, charter operators, and local fishing enthusiasts who frequent Bings Landing during peak tourism season.

County officials stated the dredging project will be rescheduled sometime after Labor Day.
