PALM COAST, Fla. (September 11, 2023) – Closing out a day of 9/11 memorial ceremonies, the City of Palm Coast and Palm Coast Fire Department hosted a candlelight ceremony on Monday evening.

Offering remarks of togetherness, Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin reminded residents of the unified spirit Americans felt in the days and weeks after the 9/11 tragedies. Noting a drifting away from the shared American values and neighborly compassion, Alfin hoped residents would rediscover that love for one another.

“We illuminate and unlock our emotions together as a community at this ceremony tonight,” said Alfin.

“I vow to you today to lead the challenge for us to join as a community that values peace. We owe it to all the families of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 and we owe it to ourselves. Let’s say it loud and let’s say it proud. Today we are a united Palm Coast.”

Inspirational music from the Choral Arts Society of Palm Coast uplifted spirits and those assembled joined in as they sang “God Bless America”, before the tolling of the bell, led by Palm Coast Fire Department Chaplin Chris Cottle.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill’s optimism shines through with each speech he gives. Even when addressing the circumstances surrounding the fateful days of September 11, 2001, his hope for a better world is evident.

While the evening was cut short due to rain, the overall message was clear.

“Being intentional about remembering is more than a nice to have. We owe it to those who gave their lives on that day. It’s a must,” said Berryhill.

“It’s very important for us to never forget because the heroes of 9/11 their sacrifice is something that wasn’t in vain and should inspire us to be a little bit better.”
