April 14, 2023 – Flagler County and its grant application partners, River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization and Volusia County, will receive $320,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Safe Streets and Roads for All” program that is funded by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure law.
“It is very important for Flagler County to work together with these regional partners to develop a ‘Comprehensive Safety Action Plan’ for implementation through future Safe Streets and Roads for All implementation grants,” said County Engineer Faith Alkhatib. “The goal is to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all within the two counties.”
The local funding match for Flagler is $20,000 – 25% of the total local match. Volusia County will contribute the other $60,000.
“A single fatal crash is one too many,” said County Administrator Heidi Petito. “Safer roads benefit everyone –from drivers to cyclists, pedestrians to public transit users. This opportunity ensures that no one is left behind in our efforts to build a transportation system that prioritizes safety and accessibility for all.”
Having a holistic, well-developed strategy guiding the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan will help achieve this for the region.
“The need for safe streets in Palm Coast for both drivers and pedestrians cannot be overstated. The safety of our community will always be a top priority, and this study is an important step towards making our streets safer,” said Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin. Improving street safety is crucial for creating a more livable and sustainable community. By prioritizing street safety, Palm Coast and Flagler County are positioning us for long-term success.”
Flagler County had 93 fatal crashes between 2016 and 2020, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Motor Vehicle Crash Data Querying and Reporting.
“We are grateful to be collaborating with Flagler County and the River to Sea TPO on this crucial Safety Action Plan,” said Volusia County Traffic Engineering Director Jay Williams. “Volusia County is ready to work toward the shared goal of creating safer roads for our residents and visitors. Through this grant, we will be closer to turning that vision into a reality.”
