Palm Coast – April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving as any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from driving, such as texting, eating, talking on the phone, adjusting the radio or navigation system, and more.

In 2021 alone, 3,522 people were killed in distracted driving crashes nationwide. This is why the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and Palm Coast Fire Department (PCFD) have partnered to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring Sheriff Rick Staly and Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill.

“We want to remind everyone in Palm Coast and Flagler County that distracted driving isn’t just dangerous, it’s also illegal,” said Sheriff Staly. ” In the state of Florida, texting is illegal for all drivers. Handheld device use is prohibited in school zones, school crosswalks, and work zones when workers are present. We hope this PSA will remind you to put your phone down, focus on the road, and get to your destination safely.”

Fire Chief Berryhill added, “As first responders, we see the devastating consequences of distracted driving firsthand and the traumatic impact they can have for not just the driver, but all parties involved. It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others on the road. When you get behind the wheel, just drive.”

The City of Palm Coast’s social media channels will feature a #JustDrive campaign with information, statistics, and tips for safe driving throughout April. You can watch the PSA featuring Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly now by clicking here.
