BUNNELL, FL – Thanks in part to a gorilla suit, K-9 Jax takes ‘barking’ rights in this year’s FCSO ‘Howloween’ costume contest.
The golden Labrador Retriever won top spot in the poll posted on FCSO’s social media accounts last Thursday (October 27, 2022), finishing well ahead of his fellow FCSO K-9’s. Jax gathered 217 first place votes out of 600 cast, according to Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly.

“We knew Jax would be a strong contender but all the K-9 costumes and background selections were great and reflected the creativity of our K-9 handlers and their partners,” Sheriff Staly added. “Congratulations to Jax and I hope he and Deputy First-Class Nicholas Champion enjoy being top howloween dog for the day!”

Jax – an explosive ordinance detention K-9 who partners with DFC Champion – received 36.17% of the vote, followed by K-9 Keanu in his weightlifting costume at 19.67% (118 votes) and K-9 Holmes in his hot dog costume at 16.00% (96 votes). K-9 Odin’s shark costume earned him 15.17% (91 votes), followed by K-9 Axle’s dragon at 7.50% (45 votes) and K-9 Baro’s bumblebee at 5.50% (33 votes).

Jax will be retiring from duty soon at FCSO, with DFC Champion taking on a new K-9 partner in Nitro. Nitro is currently in training and will likely be ready to hit the streets of Flagler County with DFC Champion early next year.
