Life is unfair.  The professional reality is plenty of executives, supervisors, and co-workers during your career play favorites and treat talent unfairly.  They write personal checks on the company bank account hiring and promoting friends and failing to recognize talent and motivated individuals. Integrity and performance must govern but subjective factors can control.

Here’s what I advise the stars who call me for career advice.  If all evidence confirms it’s not you, then it’s them.

If that supervisor ignores your excellent ideas and minimizes your contributions only to continually promote his or her buddies, you have only one choice.  The senior leadership put this idiot into this position so they are part of the problem too.

The single solution is to start looking for a better opportunity. Your time and talent matters.

Don’t waste any more of it on them. The managers who play favorites will cost the company millions over time but that’s their problem not yours. Talent goes to where it is welcome. Be fair to yourself.  Make the move. Do it now.
