ST. AUGUSTINE — From award-winning theatre and live music to poetry, film, history and community celebrations, The Waterworks is closing out the summer with an impressive lineup of events designed to entertain audiences of all ages.
Since 2022, The Waterworks has served as a vibrant gathering place for the community. Originally built in 1898, the beautifully restored historic venue continues to celebrate the arts by hosting music, theatre, poetry, educational programs and special community events throughout the year.
The month begins with ShepardFest 2026, running July 29 through Aug. 2, a five-day festival celebrating the work and legacy of acclaimed American playwright Sam Shepard. The festival features bold theatre productions, film screenings, engaging conversations and special events, with both free and ticketed programming available.
Music lovers can enjoy EMMA Words & Music on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 1 p.m., featuring internationally acclaimed violinist Ilana Zaks-Nederlander. Known for her expressive performances and musical storytelling, Zaks-Nederlander has appeared as both a soloist and ensemble performer throughout the United States and Europe. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
History and community service come together on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m., when actress Dianne Jacoby presents the one-woman performance “Ophelia, Florida Suffragist.” The production tells the story of a local woman’s fight for women’s voting rights while serving as a fundraiser for the Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition, supporting programs that help stabilize families and reduce homelessness in St. Johns County. Tickets are $35 or two for $60.
Classic film fans can enjoy “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. The beloved coming-of-age story follows a young girl growing up in early 20th-century Williamsburg, capturing both the struggles and joys of family life. Admission is free for members and $10 for non-members.
Elegance takes center stage during the Easter Parade Royal Tea on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. Hosted by the St. Augustine Royal Family, the afternoon features traditional tea service, live music and sweet treats. Guests are encouraged to embrace the festive spirit by wearing fancy dresses, hats or period costumes. Tickets are $55, and seating is limited.
Later in the month, Catalyst Theatre presents the hilarious musical comedy “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” Performances are scheduled for Aug. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30, bringing audiences to Armadillo Acres, where an unforgettable cast of quirky Florida trailer park residents finds life turned upside down when a mysterious newcomer arrives. General admission is $35, and opening night includes a special launch party following the performance.
Community members of all ages are invited to participate in Into the Rhythm Drumming on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. The interactive workshop encourages connection and creativity through rhythm in a welcoming, hands-on environment. Instruments are provided, and participation is free.
The month concludes with Ancient City Poets on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 2:30 p.m., where local poets and poetry enthusiasts gather to share original works and celebrate the power of the spoken and written word. The event is free and open to the public.
