Leadership Lessons with Dr. Saviak: Essential Leadership Characteristics

Can you can make the difficult decisions others avoid, take all the blame, give away all the credit, let everyone feel safe to speak even against your ideas, allow others to make many decisions, pour yourself into others to ensure their success, and embrace valid criticism improving when you should?

Can you accept being criticized unfairly, focusing first and always on the team and mission not yourself, never being thanked, or recognized for success but definitely being blamed for failure, and never let it truly bother you for a minute more?

You’ll lose your chance to avoid responsibility and criticism. You can’t lose your temper, feel self-pity, or hold personal grudges. You can never take personal offense.  You can’t ever indulge your ego or use your position or influence for self-gain.  You’ll have to admit your mistakes.

You can’t expect thanks, claim credit, or seek awards or applause. You can never lie or be arrogant.  You’ll never get to be the hero or the victim.  You can’t ever blame others. You can’t hide or play it safe.  Because no one will follow you if you do.

Leaders win the opportunity to selflessly serve. We win the victory of leading a life for purposes far greater than ourselves.

We win by making the hopes, dreams, and problems of others our own. We win the chance to help improve life for families, customers, organizations, and communities.

We get to grow leaders because we love it most when others win.  We succeed through aiding in the success of others. We win when the mission is achieved and the team succeeds.  We win only when others win. We only get by giving.

If you can do this, you can lead.

Flagler Sheriff’s Employee Assistance Trust Breaks Records at 2022 Gala

Palm Coast, FL (3/19/22) Setting a record, the 2022 Flagler Sheriff’s Gala on Saturday night exceeded expectations, thanks in part to a more than generous donation from an Orlando benefactor.

Sharing the surprise donation with a sold out crowd of 300 people at the Hammock Beach Resort, Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly revealed the generosity of attorney Dan Newlin to the Flagler Sheriff’s Employee Assistance Trust. Newlin, who was reportedly on a plane for Poland to help at-risk refugees stay out of the clutches of human traffickers, was represented by a member of his staff to receive recognition from the sheriff.

The $50,000 donation boosted this year’s total beyond anything the previous galas raised and helped edge the fund’s total over the years to more than $455,000, according to FSEAT board member Frank DeAngelo. Early estimates for the night put the evening’s fundraising at $167,000, doubling previous years’ totals.

With a goal of a million dollars, Staly, who modeled the program after one started in Orlando while he served as the undersheriff, said the funds support members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in their times of need, such as last year’s passing of Deputy First Class Paul Luciano.

Florida Representative and House Speaker-designate Paul Renner, a former prosecutor, expressed the state’s strong support for law enforcement as one of the evening’s speakers, drawing robust applause from guests.

Announcing their ‘retirement’ from the board of directors, Don Madden and Frank DeAngelo emceed their final gala together, showcasing why the event has been so successful over the past several years, and the two bantered with humor. The evening offer the public a chance to meet new board members Sandy S. and retired Florida Highway Patrol Chief Derek Barrs.

Chief Michael Muller – who was away enjoying a well-deserved vacation, and 2021 Citizen of the Year, Gina Walters.

Out to support a good cause.

Also recognized during the gala were the 2020 recipients – 2020 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year Detective Corporal Agustin Rodriguez, 2020 Detention Deputy of the Year Detention Deputy Douglas Evans, 2020 Professional Support Employee of the Year Communications Specialist First Class McKenzie Davis and 2020 Volunteer of the Year Evelyn Gomes.

Friday Lunch Date with Melodye Lewis: A Life Worth Binge Watching

‘Season Pilot”

I never really watched a lot of TV throughout my adult life.  I’d turn on the occasional Criminal Minds episode and then there was football season, which as a Miami Dolphins fan, was more of a screaming at the TV season. Enter:  Corona 19. Suddenly, I found myself literally glued to my couch clicking between the endless streaming subscriptions I had recently acquired. I watched Netflix; all of it. Prime became my new best friend and seriously, where had this fire stick been all my life?   My world had now become centered around the next Dutton family blowout and inventing possible scenarios of how flight 828 disappeared for five years. Can you relate?  I mean in our defense, we were in lockdown and quarantine. What originally was a temporary measure to flatten the curve became our new normal.  What else could we do except stay inside and entertain ourselves with endless hours of binge watching?

Why am I telling you all this?  Well let me start by telling you a little about myself and my journey into a new chapter of my life.  Most of you don’t know me…that’s ok. You will. Some of you may know me as the mom who booted the system in 2020 by renting the rooftop of a hotel so the high school seniors could have a prom. Or maybe you know me as the creator of the Adopt a Flagler County Senior and Volusia/Flagler Standing together for Community pages on Facebook that I created during what I call “life in the time of Covid.”  Nevertheless, here I am about to embark on a new journey. A journey with you. A journey outside the four walls of your living room and away from the remote control.

If you would have told me a year ago that I would be writing this column I would have thought you were nuts. Why in the world  would anyone want to hear about my crazy stories?  So here’s the deal.  I’m a recent empty nester, single, and only weeks away from that number that so lovingly describes midlife.  Oh, “bless her heart,” you are probably thinking.  Nothing like a triple whammy of unfortunate circumstances. To be honest, it’s not exactly what I envisioned for myself but it is what it is.  Don’t worry I’m not looking for a pity party. Actually, I’m looking for exactly the opposite. If I am taking this trip over the hill you can bet I’ll be wearing some red bottom shoes and sporting a Gucci suitcase. I’m giving my couch the eviction notice and grabbing my passport!  I mean, who says I can’t take the scenic route?   I don’t want the highlight of my day to be The Squid Game or Tiger King or Bird Box (which I am still trying to figure out how to get those wasted hours back).  What about you?  Don’t you think it’s time to take our lives back?  It is time to play the lead in my story and the casting director. I want adventure, romance, action and comedy!  I want my chapter 2 to be binge-worthy!

Now this is where YOU come in.  I don’t want to participate in this live-streaming series alone!   I invite you all to join me as I venture on this road of self discovery. Along the way we will find new adventures together, places to see, things to do and people to meet.  Join me on this biweekly exploration of what lies over the hill. Now get heck off the couch and live your best life!
