Bunnell, FL – American Association of University Women (AAUW) Flagler County Branch received notification from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation the application submitted by the branch for Alice Scott Abbott had been approved by the Foundation’s trustees on Friday, November 19, 2021.

Prior to the centennial of suffrage, The National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites (NCWHS) partnered with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to launch a marker grant program designed to support the National Votes for Women Trail and commemorate the history of Woman’s Suffrage in the United States. The Pomeroy Foundation and its signage grant programs honor history, including everything from New York State history and the National Register of Historic Places to commemorating folklore and women’s suffrage.

In March of 2020, AAUW Flagler submitted an application packet in order to add Alice Scott Abbott’s name to the National Votes for Women Trail (NVWT). This project of the NCWHS identifies many sites, integral to the suffrage movement, and makes them accessible through a mobile-friendly website easily searched by location, suffragist, ethnicity, and other helpful criteria. Alice Scott Abbott was added to the digital National Votes for Women Trail in April of 2020. Friday’s announcement will allow for the placement of the National Women’s Suffrage Marker at the final resting place for Alice Scott Abbott. This is a unique and limited program featuring a specially designed marker.

Although her health was failing, Mrs. Abbott continued to diligently work to instruct ‘Flagler’s Dear Women’ so they would qualify and register to vote for the historic November 2, 1920, General Election. Like many suffragists, Alice Scott Abbott died before casting her first ballot.

Many celebrations for the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment were interrupted, postponed, or canceled due to COVID-19. AAUW Flagler hosted an event at the Holden House honoring 100 Years of Women Voting and in 2021, they celebrated Women’s Equality Day with an event at the First United Methodist Church of Bunnell. With the award of this marker, a permanent reminder of the legacy of Woman’s Suffrage, and the contributions from women like Alice Scott Abbott, will be on display, year-round, at the historic Espanola Cemetery. Plans for the unveiling will be forthcoming.

Thankful Tidings: Elite Airways Delivers Inaugural Flight for the Holidays

Just a hop, skip and a jump and Tricia is in Florida among family including sister-in-law Nina LaFleur, brother John Martin and mother Diane Martin, who live in St. Johns County in time for the Nights of Lights this weekend as one of the first passengers to arrive from Newark, New Jersey on Elite Airways' new route from Newark to St. Augustine at the North Florida Regional Airport on November 19, 2021.

St. Augustine/St. Johns County, FL – Just in time for the launch of the holiday season in the nation’s oldest city, friends and families had something extra special to be thankful for as passengers arrived with great fanfare when their plane reached the tarmac under an arch of water cannon greetings just days before Thanksgiving.

Taking a plane and a train to get to his destination Rob C. was ready to make history as one of the very first passengers to fly into St. Augustine on the new route. Disembarking off the sleek Elite Airways plane on Friday afternoon, he was welcomed by tourism officials and news media, eager to hear about his trip.

Among dozens of passengers arriving at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport on November 19th, this group of passengers was the first to arrive via the new non-stop flight from Newark Liberty International Airport, effectively connecting the New York and New Jersey markets to northeast Florida.

Excited, Rob said he wanted to show his support for the route by being on the first inbound flight.

“I live here in St. Augustine and I’m here to support it,” he said after starting his trek 24 hours before to catch the flight home. “It was nice, not crowded. It was a big plane, comfortable, lots of leg room. This saves an hour drive to Jacksonville and the flight was quick too.”

Also on the flight to St. Augustine, another passenger was ready to head home from the regional airport nestled just outside of the city of St. Augustine. Working in New York, the new route provides easy, direct access between his home in St. Johns County and place of employment in New York.

“I work in New York and decided to take this flight because it was not only flying into this airport but it’s closer for me to get to my house than Jacksonville,” he said.

“It’s a pretty inexpensive flight so it works well for me and it’s going to help me immensely.”

Reuniting family, Tricia was greeted by her brother John Martin, sister-in-law Nina LeFleur and her mother Diane Martin, after arriving on Elite Airways.

Just a hop, skip and a jump and Tricia is in Florida among family including sister-in-law Nina LaFleur, brother John Martin and mother Diane Martin, who live in St. Johns County in time for the Nights of Lights this weekend as one of the first passengers to arrive from Newark, New Jersey on Elite Airways’ new route from Newark to St. Augustine at the North Florida Regional Airport on November 19, 2021.

“My family lives here and I live up there so I’m hoping this flight stays with us. That would be great,” she said.

“To have John’s sister be able to fly right in, it took us about 5 minutes to get to the airport from home. This is wonderful,” said LeFleur.

John Martin said he was happy to have an even more convenient way to connect his family, especially ahead of the holiday season.

“It’s super exciting and it makes it very convenient for us and the whole family,” said Martin.

“My mom lives in Palencia, my uncle lives in Palencia, and my uncle also has a place in Westchester so we’re looking forward to the opening up of more hubs because it would only be 10 minutes away from both. This is a great avenue to come down for our area. We’re really excited and we hope that it does very well.”

Serving business commuters, families and vacationers, the expansion of Elite Airways’ service to include St. Augustine is something both tourism officials and the airport authority are thrilled about.

An exciting moment as St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau President and CEO Richard Goldman and his team greet the first passengers to arrive from Newark, New Jersey on Elite Airways’ new route from Newark to St. Augustine at the North Florida Regional Airport on November 19, 2021.

“They’ll be here for Light Up night and so we’re excited about that, and we know they’ll be excited about it,” shared Richard Goldman, President and CEO of St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau.

While it was a bit blustery upon arrival, Goldman’s sunny smile and positivity radiated to airline passengers as he greeted them with welcome gift bags.

“It’s an 88-seat airplane so we’re nearly 50 percent full right out of the box, so everybody seems to be great,” said Ed Wuellner, executive director for the Northeast Florida Regional Airport.

“I think it’s going to be tremendous here. This is the number one market without question that we’d love to have connected to us. These guys provide a great niche market.  It’s a great location and I understand the gate location in Newark puts them right next to the train stop to get into the city, so it could not be easier for somebody looking to get up there and have a good time.”

Waxing Poetic: I’m Here For the Gravy

On Thanksgiving we have many reasons to be thankful and one of them is looking forward to the holiday dinner and gathering with family. Today, we’re thankful for L. White waxing poetic about those holiday dinners that become the stuff of legend.

By: L. White, Maze Media Works

I’m Here For The Gravy

I’m here for the gravy

On another day
I might be lazy

On another day
I might say maybe

But on this day
Before this life slays me
I’m here for the gravy

We’re here for this day
And my family so crazy
Thanksgiving day
We’re here for the gravy

The news of last year
The news of today
Not gonna sway me
I’m here for the gravy

If I have to keep things stable
I’ll take a seat at the kiddies table

I’m not here for real or imagined distortions
I’m here for greater portions
Great to see you today

For our sakes
Give thanks
That’s what it takes
Be here for the gravy

On another day
I might be lazy
I might say maybe

On Thanksgiving day
I’ll take a pass on the crazy
Just pass me the gravy

Because today there’s no maybe
I’m here for gravy

Flagler County Education Foundation Raises $30,000 for Josh Crews Writing Project

Flagler County, FL – Ushering in the Christmas holiday with America’s favorite family, the Flagler County Education Foundation celebrated the 11th annual Josh Crews Writing Project fundraiser with a Griswold Family Christmas and Drive-In Movie night on Friday evening.

Erecting a tent at the Epic Theaters in Palm Coast, guests came dressed in their Griswold Family finest enjoying dinner, drinks and the hap-hap-happiest Christmas event of the season.

Joe Rizzo, director of the Flagler County Education Foundation, and co-founder of the annual fundraising event shucked suit and tie formal role for the night, coming with wife Teresa as the theme’s most iconic couple, Clark and Ellen Griswold.

“The theme is a little different this year. In year’s past it’s always themed after a book and this year with the uncertainty of COVID, when we started planning it we wanted to give people an option to be safe so, we did a drive-in movie based on the movie ‘Christmas Vacation’, so we have a private party on one side of the deal and an option for people to be socially distanced and safe on the other side of the parking lot. They’re watching the movie and we’re celebrating the fact that COVID has died down in Flagler County,” said Rizzo, impressed by the quality and creativity of the costumes.

“Absolutely. I think Judge Distler wins, though,” he said with a chuckle.

The entire cast of characters made an appearance from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, with Flagler County Judge Melissa Distler as Aunt Bethany and husband John Distler as the cigar smoking Lewis, plenty of Cousin Eddies running around, and a enough festive attire to put anyone is the holiday spirit.

Created as a way to honor Josh Crews, a lifelong friend of Rizzo and Flagler Beach shop owner Carla Cline, after his passing in a car accident in 2010 at the age of 34. Josh’s brother Adam sees the annual event as a way to carry on his brother’s legacy and passion for writing by inspiring the next generation through the Josh Crews Writing Project, and publishing young authors in Flagler County school district.

“This event’s amazing. It’s done awesome things for the kids as far as writing and the kids going further with what they can do,” said Crews. “It’s just raising a lot of money and it’s good for the community and really good for the kids and the school system. We really enjoy it and want to keep it going.”

Raising $30,000 during the evening’s fundraiser and silent auction, Rizzo credits the entire community for making great strides in education happen year after year.

“I think it’s important to remind people that it really does take a village to raise a kid and the way these people come together and support education in Flagler County, that is why we continue to improve our school system and it’s people like this that understand the importance of education and that’s priceless,” said Rizzo.

Our goal is to ensure a safe holiday shopping experience for you and our businesses. We hope everyone has a fun and safe Thanksgiving weekend Remember, drive sober or get pulled over!”

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Georgia Fugitive and Recovery of Multiple Firearms

On November 21, 2021, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling southbound on Belle Terre for a traffic infraction. The driver, later identified as Benjamin Jacob Bowie (DOB: 1/28/1998), was approached by deputies who noticed he was extremely nervous, stumbling through responses, and reaching toward the floorboard. A strong odor of what was believed to be cannabis was coming from the vehicle and Bowie was instructed to exit.

While deputies started to handle the initial traffic violation, Bowie attempted to push a deputy out of the way to regain access to his vehicle. Bowie was then secured for officer safety and during handcuffing, he again resisted while being placed into a patrol vehicle.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and a satchel-type bag was located with two firearms, magazines, and ammunition by the driver’s side floorboard. A bag of cannabis was recovered on the passenger side floorboard weighing 12.4 grams. Deputies also recovered two additional firearms, magazines, and ammunition in the trunk, along with a rubber skeleton face mask, and a black full-face knitted mask with mouth and eye holes.

Bowie was then determined to be a fugitive from Pierce County Georgia for Grand Theft Auto and had been recently arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) for Resisting Arrest with Violence and Possession of Cannabis. He had been released on bond and has a criminal history of Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Cruelty to Animals in Georgia.

“Here’s another example of how a routine traffic stop led deputies to arresting a dangerous fugitive,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “A traffic violation turned into the recovery of multiple firearms and a fugitive traveling through Flagler County. Our deputies did a great job handling this dangerous situation that could have ended very differently had this guy grabbed the gun that was under his seat. A reminder to criminals that you can run, but if you hide or come to Flagler County, we will catch you and put you in jail where you belong!”

Bowie was arrested for Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Resisting Officer without Violence, and Possession of Cannabis Under 20g. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility without further incident and is being held on no bond. Additional charges are pending.

New Exhibition -John Mellencamp: Paintings and Assemblages

DELAND, FL – November 17, 2021 – The Museum of Art – DeLand will feature a solo exhibition of works by  American artist and musician John Mellencamp, opening on January 14, 2022. The exhibition, titled John Mellencamp: Paintings and Assemblages runs through March 27, 2022.
Best known for his music, Mellencamp is an accomplished painter who has seriously pursued his art for more than thirty-five years. Solo exhibitions include the Butler Institute of American Art, the Tennessee State Museum, the Museum of Art – DeLand, the Morris Museum of Art and three exhibitions, including a two-man show with Robert Rauschenberg at ACA Galleries in New York City.
“Seven years ago the Museum of Art – DeLand presented  one of John Mellencamp’s first museum shows, and it remains one of the most well-attended in our 70-plus year history,” said Executive Director Pattie Pardee. “Fan curiosity may have driven numbers initially, but his undeniable artistic proficiency created new audiences for his paintings.  Mellencamp is such a prolific artist that he has more than enough work for the Museum to welcome him back after seven years; in fact, this exhibition features mostly new works, with only a handful among the 50  or so pieces that were painted before 2020.  It’s an intriguing look at an artist’s creative output during the pandemic. “
As his musical career flourished, he continued painting and evolved a style of portraiture influenced by the German Expressionists, particularly Max Beckmann and Otto Dix.   Mellencamp’s imagery takes its inspiration from the same sources as his music; the struggles of the working man and woman, oppressive authority and social struggle.  Like his music, the paintings are carefully composed through the structural requirements of harmony, rhythm, and order.
About John Mellencamp
Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, John Mellencamp is an acclaimed singer-songwriter and musician as well as an accomplished painter and long-time activist. Mellencamp started painting at an early age, influenced by this mother, also an artist. Mellencamp studied at the Student Art League of New York, where he discovered the work of 20th Century Modernists. As his musical career flourished, Mellencamp began to paint earnestly in the 1980s with an affinity for portraiture influenced by the works of Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy winner, recipient of The Woody Guthrie Award, the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champions Award, the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Founders Award, a member of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and co-founder of Farm Aid – a nonprofit organization whose mission is to keep family farmers on the land. Mellencamp maintains a home and studio outside Bloomington, Indiana, where painting continues to be a mainstay of his creative spirit.
John Mellencamp: Paintings and Assemblages opens on Friday, January 14, 2022 and will be on view through March 27, 2022 at the Museum of Art – DeLand, located at 100 N. Woodland Blvd.
The Museum will hold its first fundraising event since the pandemic with a VIP Opening Gala for the Mellencamp exhibit on January 13, 2022.  Details at www.moartdeland.org.
Gallery Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 and free to children under the age of 12 and all Volusia County School Students and Stetson Students.
