Artfully Yours … Art Auction Set for This Afternoon at Grand Haven

Palm Coast, FL (March 27, 2022) Ready to welcome guests for the Artfully Yours Art Auction, Dr. Awilda Hamilton and her team of volunteers from the Grand Haven Woman’s Club are offering art lovers an opportunity to indulge their inner collector with the inaugural event on Monday afternoon.

Featuring a signature drink and hors d’oeuvres for your $25 ticket, the auction will feature both silent auction for the casual bidder and a live auction for the more competitive collectors.

“This is our first, inaugural auction and we are planning to have over 100 guests attend to view art from artists who have shown nationally and some even internationally,” said Hamilton.

Selections include art for the walls and the tables, garden art and wearable art according to Hamilton, who shared that each piece was generously donated to benefit more than 30 local charitable organizations in Flagler County.

“It really shows that people who have interest in the community are really willing to give of themselves,” she said.

Flagler Beach Pineapple Gallery artist Sylvia Gortz was more than happy to donate a piece of her work to the live auction.

“I’m also a part of the Palm Coast Arts Foundation and I feel that as an artist and former gallery owner in St. Augustine, it’s important for people to actually have arts in their life,” said Gortz.

“Whether it’s music or painting or a play, it doesn’t really matter. It’s important that you enrich your view of the world and art is a big part of it.”

Bettie Eubanks

Recently back from a reception at the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee where she was among the artists recognized as part of Black History Month, artist Bettie Eubanks’ hand decorated Coach handbag and wearable art are a one-of-a-kind pieces.

“All of the pieces are to support charity and all of the money goes completely to charity and so it’s a wonderful cause,” said Eubanks.

“We have many artists who live here in Grand Haven and came up with the idea to donate a piece of art we could auction for the benefit of the Grand Haven Woman’s Club,” said committee member Nancy Carlton.

“We support over 30 charities here in Flagler County and we’re constantly raising money all year long. With the pandemic it’s been difficult for nonprofits. Last year we raised over $40,000 in spite of the pandemic, so we’re excited about this event.”

The event will be held at the Grand Haven Golf Club, 500 Riverfront Drive, Palm Coast on Monday, March 28th. The silent auction will begin at 4 pm and transition into the live auction at 5 pm. Advance tickets www.ghwomansclub.org/art-auction.

Tickets are $25 at the door and the event is open to the public.

The Big Five … with Nikki White, Author of “21 Tools”

Tell readers about yourself – how did you end up in Palm Coast, family?

Larry, (married 41 years) and I sailed into Palm Coast in August 2005 after 7 years on a sail boat. Three of those years were spent training Boy Scouts how to sail and snorkel in the Abacos. We were captains for a private charter through the islands ending that trip in Guatemala. When we returned, we managed a private conference center on one of the out islands for 2 years in the Abacos.

We stopped in Palm Coast rather than returning to San Diego, CA because of the connection to the Atlantic Ocean.   We have been fortunate to have our daughter and family (husband and 2 grandsons) move here 3+ years ago.

How did you get into the health and wellness industry and in what areas do you specialize?

In San Diego I worked as a Marriage, Family, Child Therapist in private practice. During sailing, I didn’t get the CEUs necessary to extend my license. My first job in Palm Coast was to teach the Fresh Start Program for displaced homemakers at Daytona State College.  When they changed emphasis in that program, I left it and started a new private practice as a Life Coach and Hypnotherapist, as part of The Body Therapy Center.

Talk about writing your new book. Is this your first and what is the inspiration behind it?

After 50+ years of believing that I couldn’t write (per my college professors) I was encouraged to write down the tools that I have been teaching my clients over the years.  I figured out I was letting a very old message about myself get in my way. Three friends who are published writers and COVID were the impetus to sitting down and try writing. Then another friend gave me the publishing help I needed to make it actually happen last November.

What do you hope readers will take away from “21 Tools”?

The handbook is designed to provide an easy to read, overview of 21 of the tools that anyone can use for self-improvement.  There are pages for notes. There are stories from actual clients who use the tool successfully. There are references for follow-up readings. And of course, encouragement to contact me to go into depth, when aware they could benefit from more assistance, to manage any problem in their life.

You’ve faced a number of challenges in life, how do you stay so positive?

I stay positive, most of the time, by practicing what I have been teaching others. When I use the tools, it always works to make me feel positive about myself. Then it is easy to project those characteristics to others. Smiles to stimulate smiles.

Bomb Threat Clears Pier in Flagler Beach Sunday Night

Flagler Beach, FL (March 27, 2022) A caller forced an evacuation of the Flagler Beach Municipal Pier Sunday evening with a bomb threat, with the Flagler Beach Police Department closing down SR A1A from State Road 100 to 7th Street, South according to Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Don Foley, said the agency is providing support for the Flagler Beach Police Department.

“We received a threat of possibly a bomb at the pier earlier this evening. A1A is shut down from State Road 100 to South 7th Street. The pier’s been cleared, there’s nobody on it. The beach is clear. We’re utilizing technology to make sure that we checked the pier properly and right now we’re waiting for St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office EOD department to actually come and clear the pier. There’s some backpacks on the pier that were left by people that were there when we got called and we just want to make sure that everything’s safe,” said Chief Doughney shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

“We have not identified the individual that made the call. Not as of now.”

“Thanks to Sheriff Staly who’s got plenty of law enforcement to keep this area contained. The Sheriff’s Office is helping us out tremendously and working with them hopefully we can get this thing safely cleared and get back to a regular evening in Flagler Beach relatively soon,” said Doughney.

Residents are asked to stay away from A1A, the boardwalk and the pier until the situation is cleared. The Flagler Beach Police Department will update the public on their Facebook page when the scene has been cleared.

Flagler County Small Business Community Gets Spotlight at Inaugural Small Biz Expo

Palm Coast, FL (March 26, 2022) It was near Chamber of Commerce weather as businesses from across Flagler County welcomed visitors to the inaugural Flagler County Small Biz Expo.

Advertising more than 200 businesses on display, a steady stream of people headed to Town Center in Palm Coast to check out the home show styled event where business owners and staff could talk one-on-one about their goods and services.

Easily the busiest tent, Flagler Humane Society’s executive director Amy Carotenuto was out alongside her team, offering up more than just animals.

“We’re here to showcase our business and actually were here because we have some employment opportunities too, so I’m hoping to kind of get the word out on that,” said Carotenuto. “If people aren’t looking for a job, maybe they’re looking to volunteer.

With a few of the shelter’s superstars on site, Carotenuto kept busy talking with visitors.

“We’ve got two baby bunnies and two super nice dogs and they’re working the crowd,” she said.

Melinda Rivera’s Sweet & Sassy Treats reported selling out of her product at the pop up, and Redefined Food Company’s Jodee Soltes talked with visitors about their healthy meals throughout the day.

Inside city hall a variety of 30-minute workshops offered business tips and information from organizations such as CareerSource, Cornerstone Center, and the Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin toured the lakeside business displays, chatting with residents and business owners to gage the event’s success.

“We have an incredible turnout of the small businesses that represent and are the foundation for the economic development of the City of Palm Coast,” said Alfin. “Without these small businesses we don’t exist. Without these small businesses and our support for them, we won’t be able to grow.”

Serving as a launch pad, Alfin is already looking forward to future events to showcase the community’s expanding small business ecosystem.

“There are over 200 businesses here. This will be the inaugural year. I promise you this will be done every year, and the city will try to guarantee we have beautiful weather every year, as well.”

Florida Parents Chalk Up a Win as Governor DeSantis Signs HB 1467

Daytona Beach, FL (March 25, 2022) COVID ushered in a global paradigm shift, from employment and economics to education. Homebound and in the midst of the great awakening, parents became more keenly aware of what was being taught to their children in schools across the nation.

Signing HB 1467 Friday on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, it was the testimony of parents like Alicia Farrant that made the greatest impact to those assembled and listening. While describing the reading of materials found in her child’s library at school, it was during a school board meeting that friend and reporter Jacob Engels was forced to stop reading aloud due to the explicit nature.

“He was abruptly removed from the meeting due to the graphic content of what he read to a room full of adults,” shared Farrant during her remarks. “A book that was made easily accessible to our children in their school library, yet was deemed inappropriate for adults in a school board meeting.”

Distressed and disgusted, the result was Farrant – a mother of five children in Orange County’s public school system, signing up to run for school board to make a change.

“I’m here to advocate for our kids and be a voice for parents,” she said. “I never thought I’d be in politics, but here I am. If I don’t rise up, who will?”

Watching as the governor signed the legislation on Friday, Farrant was overjoyed.

“I am just thrilled that they are putting our children and families first.”

On hand as an example of the ‘Year of the Parent’, dozens of parents from Northeast and Central Florida lined the walls of the press conference including chair of the Moms for Liberty Flagler County Chapter, Shannon Rambow.

Among those who have been vocal in Flagler County’s own school board dust ups, Rambo said that with the signing of the bill providing for more transparency in schools across Florida regarding the selection of curriculum and library reading materials, and an avenue for parents to review and lodge objections for materials deviating from state standards or deemed to be inappropriate, she’s encouraged and ready to look ahead.

“I’m really excited to see the governor sign this amazing bill,” said Rambow.

“It’s the Year of the Parent. (I hope) that we can all come together. Many of these things I think that we can agree on as parents and just as human beings. Let’s get back to the basics with our kids – reading, writing, arithmetic. Moving forward, we’re on a mission.”

Joined by Flagler County School Board member Jill Woolbright, Pastor Jearlynn Dennie has been a staunch advocate for speaking up on behalf of children and parents, and defending the Parents’ Bill of Rights.

“I’m very excited about the transparency in our public school system and our education system,” said Dennie. “It’s important that parents and teachers and faculty and staff are completely aware of what’s being taught in our schools. I’m excited to be here today.”

Sharing a litany of wins on the education front over the past year, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis drew chuckles and cheers while speaking openly about his support for term limits – the second piece of the legislation’s teeth, from the local to the federal level.

“I’m a big believer that our Legislature should be term-limited and the school board. I’m also a big believer that members of Congress should be term limited,” he said.

“It would make a big, big difference. I don’t see how you drain a swamp when you have people there for 30 or 40 years. It just doesn’t work that way. So this is good for the school board. You know you don’t want little swamps at a school board either. But we can look to see how term limits in Florida has worked and apply that to DC,” said DeSantis, joined by Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson, Florida’s Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran, and Central Florida legislators for the bill signing.

A father of six, Corcoran offered his full-throated support of the Legislature’s efforts to define the roles and responsibilities of educators and parents in a student’s education.

“At the core of it, which you’ve heard from a lot of speakers, is accountability, transparency – and empowering parents makes everything better,” he said. “There’s no greater accountability than telling a politician your career ends dead certain at this point in time. Having term limits for school board members is long overdue.”

“The real winner today is our school children,” said Corcoran.

“Parents want education for their kids. They’re not interested in indoctrination through the school system,” said DeSantis. “We are going to make sure that parents have a seat at the table and that we protect their rights.”

A Life Worth Binge Watching: Fall Down; Cowgirl Up

Season 1 Episode 1:  Fall Down; Cowgirl Up

One of my favorite childhood memories is my Sunday afternoon routine with my Granddaddy.  We would climb into his old Ford pickup truck and head to the Circle K store at the foot of our street.  I can remember being so excited to walk down the candy aisle in search of my favorite treats. After picking out a few Tootsie Rolls, Boston Baked Beans or those little colorful sugar dots on paper, I’d joyously take my sack of candy from the clerk, and we’d be on our way.  We drove for what seemed to be forever while I feasted on my delicious snacks, giving Grandaddy a Tootsie Roll since that was his favorite.  I can still smell the gas of his old carburetor mixed with the cloud of dirt that stirred up as he pulled the truck off the side of the road to our destination.  I would squeal with delight as I jumped out of the truck and ran up to the gate of the vast, green field. It was time to see the horses.

There’s something about a horse.  If you have ever spent any time around them, you know exactly what I mean.  Once a horse touches your soul, they never let go. Throughout my life I have held on to my infatuation of these grand, majestic creatures.  In my 20’s I even owned a couple and started taking lessons in barrel racing.  Unfortunately, this dream was cut short one night when I got a call from the barn.  My horse, Cowboy was rolling from colic, and we would have to transport him to Ocala to the nearest equine hospital. I called my mom and bonus dad and they met me at the barn.  When we got to the hospital, the vet on duty said that it could go either way.  I remember pacing for what seemed hours until she came back out to give the news that Cowboy did not make it. I was devastated.  There are no words that explain the feeling of driving two hours home with an empty trailer, leaving your best friend behind.

Well now that I have you all depressed, let’s fast forward to the present day. Life sometimes gets you down, but you gotta get back on that horse.  Although losing Cowboy ended my days as a horse owner, I’ve continued to ride whenever possible and introduced my daughter to the love of the gentle, yet strong animal. In our travels, we have ridden on top of dormant volcanoes in Hawaii and the snow-covered mountains of Colorado. This past week when she was home from college for spring break, we added a new horseback riding adventure to our list…. the beaches of Palm Coast.  Yes, I said Palm Coast!

My friend Jen owns Equestrian Adventures of Florida, so I called her up to see what rides she had to offer. To my delight, she had a beach ride set up for the next day!  My daughter Abbie and I have been wanting to ride on the beach but didn’t realize we could do it here in our own backyard.  We met Jen and our guide, Terry at Mala Compra Park on a perfect sunny Florida day.  We rode for an hour down the beach with the most heavenly view of the waves breaking onto the rocky shore.  The horses knew exactly where they were going and when to turn around. Beach goers gawked enviously at us as they took pictures. If I closed my eyes, I could feel myself as a child again, running and giggling on that Sunday afternoon with Grandaddy. Horses, the ocean, sun and memories both old and new…it was well with my soul.

I enjoyed the ride so much that I decided to do another one this past Sunday, but this time at Princess Place Preserve.  This massive local park that I didn’t even know existed, was breathtaking.  If you haven’t been there, I highly suggest it, as there is quite a bit of history behind it.  The scenery was incredible with magnificent oaks and manicured trails winding beside bluffs overlooking the waterway. I rode Jolly, the same horse that I had the pleasure of bonding with on the beach ride.  Jolly liked to leisurely walk at the back of the pack and sorta beat to his own drum; that is, until he felt like proving he could pass a fellow trail mate with an unexpected yet exhilarating trot. They say horses of a feather stick together so we made a great team.  I found myself imagining that I was starring in my own Yellowstone episode and riding off into the sunset with my own Rip Wheeler.  Ahhhh, I digress.

So, what will you do this week?  Start by digging deep into what makes you happy. What gives your soul a feeling of peace or well-being?  Connect with your inner childhood memories and be open to where they take you.  Don’t look for another series to watch, start creating your own!  Feel it.  Find it.  Do it. It’s your life, so live it!

Flagler Tiger Bay Club Welcomes Speaker-Designate Paul Renner to Sold Out Crowd

t

Palm Coast, FL – (March 23, 2022) With 120 members and guests in attendance for the March Flagler Tiger Bay Club meeting, Florida Representative and House Speaker-Designate Paul Renner provided an overview of the 2022 legislative session and preview of the priorities slated for the upcoming session, when he formally becomes the next Speaker of the House for the Florida Legislature.

Ending a call with Florida Senate-Designate President Kathleen Passidomo before the luncheon, it was a demonstration of the relationship the two share and a foreshadowing of their ability to work together between the chambers to better Florida’s future.

Acknowledging the state’s advances, Renner remains focused on tackling future challenges while exercising fiscal prudence with the tax payer dollar.

Photo: Flagler News Weekly

“There is a great report card for Florida, I think the arrows are all up in the right directions with a couple of exceptions but the challenges are clear in front of us,” he said.

“Those challenges, I would say, are not sexy challenges for members of either party to necessarily address, it’s just not. What happens underneath your feet when you flush the toilet, you expect it to go somewhere and be taken care of. When you get on the road you expect not to have your car beaten up by potholes or to sit in traffic for hours to get home to your family or to get goods to market.”

“What are we doing with the historic revenues we’ve had coming in the state of Florida just from economic activity before you get to federal dollars, but also the avalanche of billions of federal dollars heaped on top of that. I believe we’ve used those very, very wisely. We have invested in part in reserves, I think we’re up over 20 percent relative to general revenue. We’ve got I think 8 or 9 billion in reserves right now, which is an historic number that we’ve never had before.”

Addressing long-term capital intensive projects, major investments were made into water quality, and the Forever Florida conservation fund, along with the clearing out of a backlog of deferred maintenance, the PICO List at state colleges, and an increase in funding for K-12 students and teachers.

In addition to public safety, infrastructure and public-private-partnerships, Renner, a fan of term limits, noted the responsibility legislators have to lay the groundwork for future public servants to maximize their positive impact on the state and local communities.

“Going forward, I think the challenge again is going to be how do we reorient people’s thinking towards sustained commitment towards those things that need a long-term approach,” asked Renner, seeking to balance transportation, infrastructure and growth needs with conservation, adding cybersecurity to the list of priorities.

“We want to balance all those things, and I pledge that we will take a strategic approach to these issues,” he said.

The meeting marked the Flagler Tiger Bay Club’s return to the Hammock Dunes Club, and welcomed nearly two dozen President’s Guests to hear from the future Speaker.

“Paul Renner was outstanding,” said Flagler Tiger Bay Club President Greg Davis.

“The program could not have been better. We were completely sold out and our guests started arriving at 11 am. From the speaker, the programming, the attendance, the audience engagement, our Young Tigers, the venue, it could not have been any better, and that is what our members and guests told me. What a coming home program,” he said.

The Flagler Tiger Bay Club will host Sharon A. Lamberton, Deputy Vice President of State Policy and External Outreach for PhRMA on April 20, 2022 at noon, at the Hammock Dunes Club, for their April meeting.
