“Mouth of the South”, Daytona Beach Loses a Hospitality and Tourism Titan
Daytona Beach, Fla. (July 13, 2025) – With the passing of Robert “Bob” Davis, Daytona Beach has lost far more than a hospitality leader — it has lost a voice, a mentor, a tireless advocate, and a cherished member of its heart and soul.
Bob Davis, the longtime president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, leaves behind a legacy unmatched in scope and spirit. For nearly 60 years, he was not just a fixture of the tourism and hospitality industries — he was their backbone, their compass, and their greatest champion. His passing marks the end of an era in Volusia County, one that has been shaped by his relentless energy, fierce advocacy, and unwavering commitment to people.
A Tireless Advocate for Tourism
Davis was often referred to as “The Mouth of the South,” not just for his distinct voice but for his unyielding passion in promoting Daytona Beach as a premier destination. He understood long before many others that tourism wasn’t just about attracting visitors — it was about building community prosperity. Under his leadership, the region saw visitor numbers swell from just over 8 million to more than 10 million annually. And he never stopped fighting for the frontline workers and local businesses that made that success possible.
To lose Bob Davis is to lose a champion who never sat on the sidelines. Whether it was a 5 a.m. email filled with industry news or a heartfelt plea to city leaders, Bob made sure that no one forgot the value of hospitality — or the people behind it.
A Beloved Mentor and Educator
Davis’ impact extended far beyond boardrooms and press conferences. He was a mentor to generations of hotel managers, tourism professionals, and students. He served on the Board of Hospitality Management at Daytona State College and the Board of Counselors at Bethune-Cookman University, investing his time and wisdom into future leaders.
In 2023, Daytona State College honored him with the Bob Davis Culinary and Hospitality Endowed Scholarship — a fitting tribute to a man who believed that education was the key to unlocking opportunity in the hospitality industry. His name will now live on in the achievements of every student who earns a degree because of that scholarship.
The Human Side of Hospitality
Those who worked with Davis remember his encyclopedic knowledge of the local industry, but more so, they remember his humanity. Whether it was checking in on someone during a storm or advocating fiercely for hotel workers during crises, Bob never lost sight of the people behind the profession.
“Bob Davis, our community was honored to have you in it. Whether it was tourism, education or just community involvement, nobody fought harder or believed in Beachside Daytona more than you. Your spirit, spunk, capitalized emails and ability to let us all know we were going to be participating no matter what will be sadly missed. But your legacy will live on forever in Daytona. Well done sir, a life well lived,” shared Krista Dowling Goodrich via social media upon hearing of his passing.
A Life That Touched Thousands
Bob Davis wasn’t flashy, but he was unforgettable. Known for his sandpaper voice, his signature New York Mets cap, and his ballroom dancing, he had a way of bringing joy to any room he entered. His passing leaves a silence that is hard to fill — not just in the tourism sector, but across the entire Daytona Beach community.
At a time when many would have slowed down, Davis pushed forward — even during his cancer treatments, showing up to events, sending emails, and thanking others instead of seeking recognition for himself. As he humbly said at a recent tribute, “It’s not me. It’s you that drive me, that give me the hope.”
A Legacy That Will Never Fade
As Daytona Beach reflects on the life and legacy of Bob Davis, one truth remains clear: his voice, though now quieted, will echo for generations. His work shaped the city’s growth, his leadership nurtured its talent, and his heart touched every corner of the community.
“Bob leaves behind an incredible legacy. What an extraordinary gentleman. He will be missed,” said Craig Uppercue, board member of the Volusia Cultural Alliance, via social media.
There are leaders, and then there are legends. Bob Davis was both.
In his honor, remember that in hospitality, it’s never just about business. It’s about people.
Social media tributes Include:
Jay Michael Burton, President/CEO Daytona Beach Baseball – “This is a tough afternoon as I learned of the passing of my good friend, Bob Davis. An legend and icon in the hospitality business for many years and as President of the Volusia County Hospitality and Lodging Association. Bob’s actions were always based on what’s best for Volusia County. Bob had a major impact for years on making Daytona Beach and Volusia County a much better place! To say he will be missed in an understatement. Rest in peace my friend.”
Rodney Cruise, Sr. Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – “Bob was a great leader and friend – a true tireless advocate trying to make our community better every day! He will be missed!”
Matthew Reinhart, Volusia County Councilman Vice Chairman & District 2 – “Bob Davis was more than just Volusia County’s most passionate advocate for the hospitality industry—he was one of the most sincere, generous, and dedicated individuals I’ve ever had the privilege to know.”

Palm Coast: FDLE Arrests Former IT System Administrator for Cyber Related Crimes
PALM COAST, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested Richard Clayton Wozniak, 41, of Palm Coast on four counts of offenses against computer users and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communications device, all felonies.
The investigation began in January when The Spice and Tea Exchange Company in St. Augustine, Florida, notified FDLE agents of a cyber-attack on the company’s firewall and e-mail, resulting in the deletion and alteration of company data.
The investigation revealed that Wozniak, a former employee at the tea company, had accessed the business networks within minutes of being terminated from his position in their Information Technology (IT) department. He gained unauthorized access to the business network and removed the company’s firewall, which obstructed business continuity and breached the physical security of the company.
With assistance from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Wozniak was arrested on July 9 and was transported to the Flagler County Jail.
The Office of the Statewide Prosecution in Jacksonville is prosecuting the case.
To report a Cyber data breach, please reach out to FDLE’s Cybercrime Office at cybercrimeoffice@fdle.state.fl.us.
FCSO Explorers Bring Home Multiple Awards at 2025 Summer State Conference

BUNNELL, Fla. — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Explorers attended the Florida Sheriff’s Explorers Association 2025 Summer State Conference in Orlando, Florida. Over the six-day event, FCSO Explorers trained with and competed against over 300 Explorers from counties across Florida in law enforcement-related scenarios and a shooting competition, taking home multiple team and individual awards.

Explorers competed in 12 scenario-based competitions, which were judged by deputy advisors from sheriff’s offices across the state. The FCSO Explorers team consisting of Explorer Sergeant Izzy Stanford and Explorers Angelica Ferreiro, Moesha Malcom, and Charlie Torrens placed second in the crisis intervention training scenario. Explorers also competed in the firearms competition with Explorer Travis VanDuren-Renrau taking home second place in the tyro, or novice, classification.
During the awards banquet on the conference’s final night, Explorer Sergeant Stanford was recognized for her outstanding service as the FSEA Northeast Region Vice President. Stanford was previously appointed to the position during the FSEA’s 2024 September Delegates meeting, becoming the first FCSO Explorer to hold a position on the Explorer State Board.
“Once again, our Explorers team represented our county and agency well. This is an excellent group of young men and women, and they receive great guidance from our team of advisors who mentor them,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “I highly encourage any Flagler County student who has an interest in law enforcement to consider our Explorers program and learn more about what it means to serve and protect. I began my career as an Explorer, and it kickstarted my passion for law enforcement, which has never gone away in the years since I was an Explorer.”
The FCSO Explorers program, Explorers Post 410, was established in 1986 to expose 14- to 18-year-old high school students in Flagler County to a career path in law enforcement. Explorers who successfully complete the program and wish to join FCSO after graduation from high school can receive a scholarship to attend the basic law enforcement or correctional officer academy. They can also join the agency in non-sworn positions such as CCTV operator, communications specialist, or crime scene investigator, among many other opportunities.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining the FCSO Explorers program, please visit flaglersheriff.com/public-interest/explorers.
Explorers and advisors from across Florida meet yearly in June for the FSEA Summer State Conference and quarterly at FSEA Delegates meetings each March, September and December. To learn more about the FSEA, visit sheriffexplorers.com.

Craig Flagler Palms Area Manager Sal Passalaqua Receives Prestigious Service Excellence Award
Craig Flagler Palms is proud to announce that Area Manager Sal Passalaqua, Jr.-LFD was presented with the Service Corporation International (SCI) Operations Leadership Service Excellence Award on Tuesday, June 18th at Craig Flagler Palms, located at 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach.
Passalaqua, who has dedicated over 20 years of service to the company since joining in 2004, was recognized for his exceptional commitment to serving families during their most difficult times and his embodiment of Dignity Memorial’s core values of service excellence. The rigorous selection process began with nearly 1,000 nominees company-wide, which was narrowed to 250 candidates, then to 28 finalists, before Sal emerged as one of only seven recipients selected from Dignity Memorial’s 25,000 employees nationwide.

“Sal’s application immediately stood out,” said John Faulk, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of SCI, who flew in from Houston specifically to celebrate Sal’s achievement. “I like things short, concise and to the point, but when I got to Sal’s application, I didn’t want to put it down—I didn’t want it to end. It truly exemplified what makes our team members spectacular.”
Perhaps the most moving moment of the evening came when Sal’s 16-year-old daughter, Alyna, delivered a tribute that brought tears to many in attendance. “Words will never be enough to express how proud I am of you,” she said, acknowledging that her father’s work “is more than just a job—it’s a responsibility that many people may not be able to handle, but my dad handled it with heart, grace, and absolutely relentless effort.” Her words captured the personal sacrifice behind Sal’s professional dedication: “You’ve shown me what it means to work hard as you’ve carried others in their darkest moments.”

The SCI Service Excellence Award program, created in 2007, recognizes and honors SCI and Dignity Memorial associates across North America for exceeding expectations through exemplary service and fostering the company’s culture of service excellence. Recipients are selected for their outstanding achievements in serving families with compassion, dignity, and professionalism.
“Receiving this Service Excellence Award is incredibly humbling,” Passalaqua added. “I’m grateful for the trust that families place in us and for the amazing team at Craig Flagler Palms who make it possible to serve our community with dignity and compassion. After more than two decades with this company, I’m reminded daily that our work is about so much more than business – it’s about being there for families when they need us most.”

This latest honor adds to Passalaqua’s distinguished record of community service. In 2021, he received the Outstanding Philanthropist award from the Association of Nonprofit Professionals for his contributions to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Flagler County, demonstrating his commitment to giving back extends far beyond his professional duties.
