As a seasoned angler who’s had the privilege of exploring the Matanzas River for many years, I’m thrilled to share the latest fishing report with you. Despite some unpredictable weather patterns, the fish are still active and making waves in these waters.

Redfish: Pushing Deep into the Grass

The redfish bite remains a highlight, even as the weather keeps us guessing. Thanks to the high tides driven by the northeast winds and the full moon we had today (Friday), these red beauties have ventured deep into the flooded grass. It’s like a game of hide-and-seek out here!

Flounder: Filling Up in Tidal Creeks

Flounder have also made a welcome return, and they’re on a feeding frenzy in the tidal creeks. Their favorite snack? Finger mullet. To hook these delicious fish, I’ve been using live finger mullet on a Carolina rig or jig head. Cut mullet or ladyfish also seem to be irresistible to them. Another effective tactic is presenting live shrimp on the bottom in creek bends. It’s all about finding the right angle!

Artificial Baits for the Adventurous

Now, if you’re like me and enjoy the thrill of artificial lures, scented paddle tails on jig heads are the way to go. Rig them weedless if you’re up for the challenge of getting skinny into the flooded grass. There’s something incredibly satisfying about enticing a strike with your skillful presentation.

Tarpon and Snook: Still Putting on a Show

Tarpon and snook are keeping the excitement level high around the inlets. Early morning and late evening, as well as overnight, are prime times to target these impressive species. They love to gather under the dock lights in Flagler/Palm Coast, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. For success, use large baits on minimal tackle rigs. Large live shrimp free-lined along the shadow lines are a reliable choice. Mullet, pinfish, and croakers also work wonders and help deter those pesky smaller bait thieves that can be a nuisance.

So, there you have it – a snapshot of the late September action on the Matanzas River. Despite some unpredictable weather, the fishing remains as exhilarating as ever. Remember to adapt your tactics to the conditions and enjoy every moment of the adventure. Tight lines, fellow anglers!
