FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Flagler County government turned gold this week, standing alongside local children and families affected by childhood cancer while rallying community support for the Live Like Cameron Foundation.
The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation, read by Flagler County Commissioner Andy Dance, on Monday, September 14, recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Melisa Fulling, co-founder of the Live Like Cameron Foundation, alongside several “Flagler Warriors” — local children battling cancer — and their families, accepted the proclamation during the commission’s business meeting.
The recognition comes ahead of the Live Like Cameron “Dreaming of a Cure” Pajama 5K, scheduled for September 27. The annual event brings the community together to raise awareness and support children with cancer and their families.
The gold continued throughout county government as the Flagler County Tax Collector’s Office and Flagler County Property Appraiser’s Office dressed in the official color of childhood cancer awareness.
“Today, our team went gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness,” the Tax Collector’s Office, led by Tax Collector Shelly Edmonson, shared. “We wear gold to remember the beautiful angels we have lost, celebrate the brave survivors, and stand beside the warriors who are currently undergoing treatment.”
The day was a reminder that childhood cancer is not a distant issue but one that directly affects families throughout Flagler County.
Throughout September, donations for Live Like Cameron are being collected at all three Flagler County Tax Collector locations. The local nonprofit was founded in memory of Cameron Fulling, who courageously battled brain cancer for seven years.
Live Like Cameron assists families of children diagnosed with cancer by providing financial support, gift cards, comfort items, soft bedding and care packages for hospital stays. Its work is designed to ease some of the practical and emotional burdens families face while a child undergoes treatment.
“If you visit one of our offices, we invite you to join us in supporting this wonderful local organization,” the Tax Collector’s Office shared. “Together, we remember. We celebrate. We support. And we go gold for every child and family impacted by childhood cancer.”
Flagler County Property Appraiser Jay Gardner and his staff also joined the countywide show of support.
Spearheaded by Chief Deputy Michelle Morgan, Gardner’s office recognized the strength of children fighting the disease and the loved ones supporting them.
“Childhood cancer touches families right here in our Flagler County community,” the Property Appraiser’s Office shared. “Today, we honor their courage, their strength and the families who walk beside them every step of the way.”
Staff at the Flagler County Public Library added their support for the families by going gold on Tuesday.
“No child fights alone. Today, the Bunnell Library staff wears gold to honor Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and stand with the brave kids and families fighting every day,” Library staff shared.
