BUNNELL, FL – Two adult males have been arrested this week for showing obscene material to minors following two separate investigations by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Major Case Unit.
In August 2023, deputies responded to a reported sex offense that had occurred in the Target parking lot in Palm Coast. Two juvenile females reported they were walking toward the store when a male in a gray Jeep honked at them and then held up his phone with a photograph of a penis showing. The females entered the store and asked for a store associate to escort them back to their vehicle. After leaving, the females encountered the same vehicle while stopped at a red light at Belle Terre Parkway and Cypress Point Parkway. At that time, one of the females took a picture of the vehicle’s license plate which helped investigators identify the suspect.
Investigators then contacted the registered owner of the Jeep, 26-year-old William Naughton of Palm Coast, who admitted that he has shown a photo of his erect penis to several females in various parking lots throughout Flagler County. Naughton advised that he does this for personal sexual gratification.
Naughton was arrested on October 10, 2023, for Showing Obscene Material to a Minor. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on $10,000 bond and was later released.
In early October 2023, detectives were alerted to another case of obscene material being shown to minors. Through investigative means, it was determined that 37-year-old Alan Avellan Jr. had “airplayed” or “casted” pornographic videos onto his residence’s television while several juveniles, some of whom are related to Avellan, were present in a common area of the residence on two separate occasions. While casting the pornographic videos to the television, Avellan was reportedly lying naked on his bed and touching his genitals with the bedroom door open. The bedroom was located in a clear line of sight from the common area of the home where the juveniles were located.
In an attempt to keep the juveniles from telling anyone about the incident, Avellan took the juveniles to a local cosmetics store and purchased them various items. In text messages, Avellan said that showing the pornographic videos on the TV was “just a joke.”
Avellan was arrested on October 12, 2023, for Showing Obscene Material to a Minor. He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on $7,500 bond and was later released.
“These two perverts learned the hard way that our Major Case Unit and the State Attorney’s Office will thoroughly investigate and come after anyone who subjects juveniles to any type of pornography,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Not only is this disgusting and perverted behavior but it is traumatizing to young children. Hopefully these perverts will learn their lesson the first time and if they don’t – they will end up back in the Green Roof Inn and hopefully in prison.”
