BUNNELL — Opponents of Project Butterfly are encouraging residents to attend the Bunnell City Commission meeting Monday, Sept. 28, to voice concerns about a proposed solid waste facility and its potential effects on farmland, water resources and the community’s rural character.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bunnell City Hall, 2400 Commerce Parkway. According to the event flyer, speakers will have four minutes each during public comment.
In their appeal, opponents describe Project Butterfly as a proposed Class I solid waste management facility in Bunnell’s remaining farmland, near a conservation area and thousands of households that rely on well water. They are asking commissioners to uphold the city’s Comprehensive Plan and reject the proposal.
“Let’s protect the place we call home,” the appeal states.
Those urging residents to participate point to local farms’ contributions to the economy, food production and green space that supports wildlife and natural resources. Their message emphasizes that farmland, once lost, cannot easily be restored.
The flyer also encourages residents to bring facts and questions about traffic, safety, public health, property values and emergency services.
“Choose farms. Protect our natural resources and wildlife. Stop the landfill,” the appeal states.
