A planned $18 million expansion project at Matanzas High School is underway.
A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Monday morning on the school campus at 3535 Pirate Nation Way in Palm Coast. Donning hardhats and shovels, Interim Superintendent LaShakia Moore joined MHS principal Kristin Bozeman, Flagler County School Board Members Cheryl Massaro, Christy Chong, Will Furry, and Sally Hunt, as well as Flagler Schools Chief of Operational Services Dave Freeman, and Director of Plant Services Kory Bush in turning the first shovel of dirt.
Interim Superintendent Moore says, “This project has taken so much planning. We’ve talked about this for so long that seeing the work begin is exciting. This brings life to the renderings we’ve looked at over the past year.”
Kristin Bozeman adds, “This expansion is setting up Matanzas for future growth as we continue to see rooftops rise all around our campus. We may have to deal with a few challenges with having a construction zone in the middle of your campus, but in the end, our students, faculty, and staff will have a campus design that will better fit our needs.”
The project will add or renovate more than 31,000 square feet to the campus. The largest portion is a 20,000-square-foot classroom addition. But there will also be a larger media center, expanded cafeteria space, and a new central energy plant. In addition, a new pre-engineered metal building will support the school’s physical education programs.
Classes will be conducted normally, and work will be phased in as needed to minimize interruptions. Final completion is anticipated to be July 2025.
Funding for this project comes from impact fees collected from new home construction across the county.
SchenkelShultz Architecture designed the project, and HA Contracting Corp. is the Contractor.
