ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida, March 28,2023– St. Johns County will recognize decorated veteran John L. Patton, who turned 100 on March 23. Mr. Patton is the recipient of six Bronze Stars from his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga and U.S.S. Enterprise, Mr. Patton fought bravely for the United States in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. After the war, he served as an instructor for the U.S. Navy. In total, he served in the military for more than 20 years (1941-1961). Upon his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1961, Mr. Patton continued to serve his country in the U.S. federal civil service as an Overhaul and Repair Planner and Estimator until his retirement in April 1978.
Mr. Patton will arrive at the St. Johns County Administration Building in a WWII Jeep driven by retired Army Col. Alfred Pantano at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4. He will be escorted into the building by officers of the St. Johns County Sherriff’s Office. Dignitaries will be present and speak in honor of Mr. Patton beginning at 8:15 a.m.
