City Proclamation Celebrates 75th Anniversary of Palm Coast Locals Linwood and Patsy Farmer

Palm Coast—The City of Palm Coast proudly recognized longtime residents Linwood “Nemo” and Patsy Farmer for their extraordinary 75th wedding anniversary with an official proclamation. In a special presentation at their residence in Las Palmas Senior Living Facility, City officials honored the couple’s remarkable milestone and their lasting contributions to the community.

Linwood and Patsy were married on February 4, 1950, and for more than 30 years, they have called Palm Coast home. Their dedication to the city is evident in their years of service—volunteering at the hospital and Marineland, ushering at the community theater, and serving on local boards and committees.

Linwood, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War. A dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), he was also honored as Grand Marshal of the Veterans Day Parade for his service and commitment to the veteran community.

“Linwood and Patsy’s 75-year journey together is just incredible,” said Mayor Mike Norris. “Their love and service to our community is a great example of the kind of people we have here in Palm Coast. I hope you’ll join me in wishing them a very happy anniversary.”

The City of Palm Coast congratulates Linwood and Patsy Farmer on this milestone and thanks them for their decades of love, service, and community spirit.

The Selfless Dedication of Caroline Johnson and SMART Dog Rescue: A Journey of Patience, Persistence, and Love

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – In the world of animal rescue, there are moments that push the boundaries of patience, persistence, and hope.

For Caroline Johnson and the dedicated team at SMART Dog Rescue, one such moment unfolded along the busy I-95 highway near the St. Augustine Outlet Mall.

What began as a frantic call about a scared, malnourished dog in desperate need of help quickly spiraled into a month-long mission, one that would test the limits of their resolve.

The journey began with a sighting of a female dog, alone and trembling on the side of the highway. The call for help was urgent, as the dog, traumatized by past experiences, was in constant danger from the speeding traffic on I-95.

Her fear was palpable, and any attempt to approach her only sent her running further into hiding. This was no ordinary rescue. This was a dog that had been broken by life, and each encounter with humans seemed to deepen her mistrust.

For Caroline, the founder of SMART Dog Rescue, the idea of this dog suffering alone in such peril was unbearable.

Determined to make a difference, Caroline set out on a relentless mission to find and save the dog. Day after day, she drove up and down the highway, hoping to spot her, setting up traps, deploying cameras, and scouring the area for any sign of the dog. Despite her efforts, the elusive pup always managed to slip away, further cementing the fear that had taken root in her heart.

“We worked closely with St. Johns County Animal Control, together had 5 traps set,” said Johnson. “Residents in the community were huge with sightings.”

As the days passed, the situation grew more dire. The dog was growing weaker from lack of food, and every day spent near the highway brought her closer to being struck by a car.

Caroline’s sleepless nights were filled with worries for the dog’s survival, but she refused to give up. Her commitment to the mission was unwavering, her heart fully invested in the rescue, and she knew she had to try everything possible to bring this dog to safety.

After weeks of searching with no success, Caroline decided to focus on a nearby development where the dog had last been spotted.

This time, she wasn’t alone.

Caroline brought along Otis, a gentle and compassionate dog who had helped rescue countless scared, timid dogs in the past. Otis’ warm, social nature had proven to be invaluable when it came to calming frightened dogs, and Caroline believed that with his help, the timid pup might finally find the courage to trust.

With Otis by her side, Caroline took a quiet, patient approach. Sitting calmly in the grass, she kept her presence low and non-threatening, while Otis, on a leash, sat beside her. His calm demeanor set the tone, his natural friendliness gently drawing the fearful dog closer.

For hours, Caroline and Otis waited, letting the dog come to them at her own pace. They knew it would take time; trust, after all, couldn’t be rushed. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the dog appeared.

At first, she lingered in the distance, watching cautiously. But something had shifted. The welcoming energy from Otis seemed to have worked its magic, and slowly, the dog crept closer, inching her way toward Caroline. Every movement was tentative, every step an act of bravery. Caroline didn’t rush; she remained still, giving the dog the space she needed.

The breakthrough came hours later.

With incredible care, Caroline gently placed a leash over the dog’s head, signaling the success of the mission. The rescue had finally been achieved—a whole month of hard work, countless sleepless nights, and unwavering determination had paid off.

“I got her to follow Otis and I into a park fenced area which is where she let me finally leash her. A resident used her key to open the park gate for me,” said Johnson.

This rescue story is a powerful testament to the selfless dedication of Caroline Johnson and the SMART Dog Rescue team. Their work goes far beyond just rescuing dogs; it’s about showing patience, love, and commitment in the face of difficult challenges.

Whether it’s a scared pup stranded on the side of a highway or a dog in need of a fresh start, Caroline and her team go above and beyond to make sure every dog gets the help they so desperately deserve.

Thanks to Caroline’s tireless efforts, along with Otis’ gentle support, the dog who once lived in fear now has a chance at a brighter future. It’s a story of hope, of second chances, and of the profound difference that love and persistence can make.

For Caroline and SMART Dog Rescue, this is just another chapter in their ongoing mission to change the lives of animals, one rescue at a time.

“Residents of St. Johns and Flagler counties shared posts about a dog seen along I-95 near the CR 16 exit. She was incredibly fearful of people. After a week of searching, I finally spotted her,” said Johnson.

“She was clearly traumatized, her eyes filled with sadness and fear, so that gave me the determination to keep trying. I knew I had to show her kindness and love. She’s now receiving veterinary care. I’ll be fostering her while she adjusts and learns to trust people. Once she’s ready, we’ll find her a loving forever home.”

Flagler’s Cold Weather Shelter to Open Thursday, February 20

February 19, 2025 – The Sheltering Tree is opening this week because of cold overnight temperatures that will fall below 40 degrees on Thursday (February 20). The shelter operated at the Rock Transformation Center (formerly Church on the Rock) is not only for those experiencing homelessness, but for anyone who is without heat.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures to fall below 40 degrees during the overnight hours on Thursday, which is the criteria for opening the cold-weather shelter.

The county will provide bus transportation along two routes, following the schedules below:

East side of the county

  • Dollar General at Publix Town Center on Market Avenue (leads to Dollar General), 3:30 p.m.

  • McDonald’s at Old Kings Road South and State Road 100 at the dirt road on the east side, 4 p.m.

  • Dollar Tree behind Carrabba’s in the Dollar Tree Parking lot, 4:30 p.m.

The Rock Transformation Center is located at 2200 N. State Street. The cold-weather shelter will open at 5 p.m. and will close at 8 a.m. the following day.

The Sheltering Tree, 386-437-3258, is under the umbrella of the Flagler County Family Assistance Center and is a non-denominational civic organization that was created to provide cold weather sheltering during cold nights in Flagler County.

Weather and heat safety preparedness tips from Flagler County Fire Rescue include:

  • Never use the oven to heat the home

  • All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning

  • Screen fireplaces to contain sparks

  • Portable space heaters should be kept 3-feet away from anything that can burn

  • Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed
