Florida Health in Flagler to Offer Virtual Diabetes Prevention Class Starting November 15

Bunnell, Fla.— Given that November, Diabetes Awareness Month, is only a few days away, there’s no better time to commit to improving your health and reducing your chance of developing diabetes. The Florida Department of Health in Flagler (DOH-Flagler) is offering a new opportunity to facilitate lifestyle changes and prevent diabetes through a year-long virtual Diabetes Prevention Program. The free program starts November 15 and is available to anyone, provided they are overweight, age 18 or older, and have at least one of the following:

have been told they have prediabetes or borderline diabetes;
have a family history of type 2 diabetes;
had diabetes during pregnancy; and/or
receive a high-risk result on a prediabetes test.
“Reducing the incidence of diabetes has been a public health priority in Flagler County for several years,” said Health Administrator Robert Snyder with DOH-Flagler. “The curriculum for our new virtual program is CDC-approved, and makes it easy to lose weight, become physically active and manage stress. True, we ask participants to make a 12-month commitment, but the virtual format makes it convenient to access curriculum whenever and wherever they choose.”

According to Snyder, Diabetes rates in Flagler County improved to 12 percent in 2019 from 14 percent in 2016. Despite this positive trend, there has been an uptick in the number of Flagler residents who are considered obese from 27 percent to almost 29 percent over the same three-year period.

“In just three years, our Diabetes Education Center has made a difference in helping clients learn how to manage and prevent this chronic disease,” he added. “Nonetheless, we want to do more to reduce obesity and encourage Flagler residents live healthier lives. We hope this new virtual program will help us come closer to achieving these goals.”

To sign up for DOH-Flagler’s virtual diabetes prevention class, call 386-313-7264.

Those interested in the program should also consider joining the health department, City of Palm Coast and the AdventPalm Coast Foundation’s DiaBEATes Alliance for World Diabetes Day, Sunday, Nov. 14 at Palm Coast City Hall. The health and wellness event will take place from 4 to 5PM, and will include free diabetes screenings, giveaways, and 30 minutes of group activity led by MondelloFit and Hot Yoga Lounge. Guests should come dressed to exercise and have some fun while showing support for diabetes prevention and treatment. You can register online at parksandrec.fun/events.

Through its Diabetes Education Center, the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County helps those diagnosed with diabetes lead healthier lives and helps others prevent the disease. In addition to diabetes self-management and prevention classes, free blood sugar screenings are offered weekdays from 8:30AM to 4PM. The Flagler County Health Department office is at 206 Dr. Carter Blvd. in Bunnell. For more information call 386-313-7263 or 386-313-7264.

Cheers! Taste of the Fun Coast Sip & Sample Event Exceeds Expectations

Ready to mix and mingle, guests enjoy the outdoor atmosphere during the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory's Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Palm Coast, FL (October 26, 2021) Hosting the most well attended Taste of the Fun Coast to date, more than 700 guests to the annual event were ready to sip and sample on Tuesday afternoon at the Hammock Beach Resort.

Benefiting the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, guests were eager to get the party started, with some arriving half an hour before the scheduled start time in anticipation, and restaurants across the region were happy to oblige.

Several restaurants, bakeries and catering services made their formal entrée into the area’s culinary scene at the Taste of the Fun Coast including Flagler’s newest steak house and entertainment venue, Tomahawk Tavern, led by restaurateur Jeremy Pombier.

Making her bakery debut, Melinda Rivera (right) and company bring the Sweet & Sassy Treats for the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Bakery sweetheart Melinda Rivera unveiled her new entity ‘Sweet & Sassy Treats’ with samples of baklava, rum cake and polvorón.

“I do catering for any type of sweets you can possibly imagine. I decided to try the Taste of the Fun Coast because we’re hoping within a year we can have our own storefront,” said Rivera, who says her signature chocolate cake is already receiving rave reviews.

“I’m very excited about this. I’ve always wanted to own my own business, and today just debuting, it means everything to me. I had a lady who just walked by and she said she heard my advertising on the radio and loved it, and it just swelled my heart.”

Offering a fabulous array of delightful options as the owner of Charcuterie Dreams, Angelique Delage chats with guests during the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Eye-catching mini charcuterie cones filled with Irish Cheddar, salami, nuts, grapes, flat bread and a chocolate, offered a peek of Angelique Delage’s ‘Charcuterie Dreams’. The culinary artist hopes that by showcasing her business at the tasting event, party planners will be inspired to order her unique creations.

“These are made out of palm so they are eco-friendly, on top it, so they’re disposable,” said Delage of the cones holding the delicately designed samples. “What I do is create charcuterie boxes to go. So, people order them, I deliver them to them in boxes that are sustainable and I don’t have to go back and pick anything up.”

“This is amazing for people who are really super busy but want to have something that’s elegant and a lot of fun. I really hope that the Flagler area will embrace it and it takes off,” she said.

Set to open her brick and mortar location on State Road 100 in Bunnell soon, Becca Johnson offered up a variety of baked goods for guests to enjoy from her ‘Becca’s Sweet Tooth’ menu, sharing her peanut butter and chocolate treats, fresh baked sugar cookies, caramel coasted popcorn, and more.

“This is a dream from a decade or more ago. I’m really excited to hear what everyone thinks of them,” she said, counting her key lime cupcakes and biscotti among her biggest hits with customers.

Ariel’s Fusion Cuisine and Catering prepares to serve up fresh made paella during the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Of course it wasn’t all sweets and nibbles.

Popular restaurants like The Atlantic Grille, Crab Shack 386, Beach Front Grille, and Texas Roadhouse provided generous tastings from their menus while gourmet food truck and catering service Ariel’s Fusion Cuisine had guests hovering around the oversized pot of fresh paella, inhaling the tantalizing aroma, which once ready, was quickly served piping hot.

Sharing a variety of holiday options for guests beginning to plan the upcoming season, Bill Oates, co-owner of Hammock Wine and his wife Lisa chatted amicably with guests who stopped to look or for a photo of the  tastefully displayed charcuterie boards, and a glimpse of their retail wine selection with special case pricing.

“We are very happy to support anything that has to do with our community here in Palm Coast and the surrounding area,” said Oates.

Teresa Tarr, Lisa Oates and Billy Oates share the creative options for gourmet charcuterie board entertaining from Hammock Wine, during the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

“This is a wonderful event, and a time of year where people are starting to feel good about going back out and socializing. We’re advertising some of our holiday boards that can be pre-ordered and they’re actually shaped like wreaths and Christmas trees because my wife Lisa is very talented,” he said proudly.

Participating in the Taste of the Fun Coast event gave the couple an opportunity to reconnect with friends and neighbors while supporting the sea turtle hospital according to Oates.

Enjoying the evening with wife Linda and daughter Regan, Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen was glad to see local businesses flourishing after the pandemic.

“This is terrific. We have a lot of local vendors, and anything that brings people to the Hammock and shows off our beautiful Hammock is a pleasure for me to come to and support,” said Hansen.

Flagler County Commissioner David Sullivan and Lisa Schall enjoy the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

Hoping to exceed 2020’s fundraiser to benefit the sea turtle hospital, Flagler Broadcasting’s vice president and general manager David Ayres was pleased by the enthusiasm of guests, and even happier to announce that 2021 had been even more successful, raising $10,585 throughout the evening.

Recalling the discussion with Coastal Cloud founders Sara and Tim Hale that led to the creation of the regional event, the collaboration has been a huge benefit to the sea turtle hospital, not only raising needed funds but awareness for the growing facility.

“It all started out that we wanted to do something for the sea turtle hospital at Whitney Labs,” said Ayres.

“A lot of people don’t know 386 spells F-U-N, so that’s why it used to be known as the ‘Fun Coast’. We have restaurants from St. Augustine, Daytona and mostly Flagler County here, so people can sip and sample some of the finer things we have here in the area, and it all goes for a great cause.”

In good company, George Hanns chats with Flagler Auditorium director Amelia Fulmer and Parkside Realty broker Sam Perkovich during the annual Taste of the Fun Coast event at the Hammock Beach Resort to benefit the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Hospital, on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.

St. Johns Housing Partnership HUD-Certified Housing Counseling Agency Focus of FDIC Money Smart Article

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (October 26, 2021) – The St. Johns Housing Partnership (SJHP), creating safe, clean, affordable housing in North Florida since 1996, has earned national recognition for SJHP’s HUD-certified housing counseling program.
St. Johns Housing Partnership counseling agency helps low- and moderate-income North Florida residents in St. Johns, Clay, Putnam, Flagler Counties find and keep safe, affordable housing.
FDIC Money Smart has been part of St. John’s housing foreclosure counseling efforts since 2014. It is now a requirement for any client seeking their services.
Marissa Vetter, Program Director at St. Johns, shared, “We have seen learning gains from Money Smart. We have received such excellent feedback from this course. While we are working on a solution to avoid foreclosure such as a modification, we have the homeowner completing the Money Smart course.”
These are a few recent comments made by homeowners regarding their financial education:
“[I] got a lot of credit advice and advice how to budget my money.”
“Light bulbs were coming on as I continued the courses, which have given me a better outlook now in all areas of my life, especially spending money at work on lunches. That has definitely changed for me. I now fix my lunch most of the time now to try and save some money.”
“Thank you for the modules. They were very informative and helpful. I learned a lot. And I already started eliminating unnecessary financial things.”
“The education classes were a TREMENDOUS help. I learned how to make better choices by paying bills on time and avoiding unnecessary purchases. I’ve told my friends about the course and how helpful it was.”
Vetter reflected on the SJHP program.
“As housing counselors, we find such joy in helping homeowners purchase their first home or save their home from foreclosure. We think education is key to successful homeownership and we have found Money Smart to be the best course available. We are pleased with how Money Smart has helped us with our response to the COVID pandemic. This course helps homeowners out of the financial crisis they are in and gives them tips and tools to financially prepare for future hardships.”

HoldIT Lockers Provide 24-hour Access to Reserved Library Materials at Palm Coast Main Branch

October 26, 2021 – Flagler County Public Library is amping up convenience for patrons with 24/7 contactless access to reserved materials at the Palm Coast main branch with the installation of secure, electronic HoldIT lockers purchased through a state CARES grant last year.

“We are so excited that these lockers are now in place and ready for use,” said Library Director Holly Albanese. “There were some supply chain delays that slowed things down, but we are thrilled to have them so we can offer this expanded service to our residents.”

Using the lockers, located outside the front door under the portico, is as easy as one two three:

  1. Reserve items online using the “Library Catalog” tab from the left-hand navigation menu on the Library homepage (https://www.flaglercounty.gov/departments/library).
    1. Choose “Palm Coast HoldIT Lockers” as the pickup location.
    2. Notification when the items have been secured (there is a four-day deadline for retrieval).
  2. At the Library, scan the library card at the locker kiosk to remove the reserved items.
  3. Don’t forget to close the locker when finished.

There is a video demonstration on the Library’s Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/FlaglerCountyPublicLibrary.

“It’s a very simple process,” Albanese said. “The convenience these lockers offer is unparalleled, as patrons can pick up their materials 24/7 and don’t have to be limited to our open hours for curbside.”

Flagler County Public Library in September 2020 received a $36,000 state CARES grant to enhance residents’ safety through the provision of more contactless services for the community. The lion’s share of this grant money was used to purchase the lockers.

The application was made on behalf of Flagler County by the Northeast Florida Library Information Network. The NEFLIN library cooperative serves 24 counties, and its board selected only four recipients of the 21 submittals it received for CARES grant assistance – one of which was Flagler County.

“We miss the crowds at the library that we had pre-COVID, but we continually adapt and incorporate new technologies for the benefit of our residents,” Albanese said. “We provide the highest level of service we can, and are pleased to bring new innovations to the community.”

New Business: Hometown Handshake Opens Trustco Bank In Palm Coast

Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen talks about the value of small businesses in community as Trustco Bank Branch Manager Vincent Amore, Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin and Trustco Bank Florida Regional President Eric Shreck celebrate the official grand opening on Monday, October 25, 2021.
An exciting moment for Palm Coast as the new Trustco Bank branch is officially opened on Monday, October 25, 2021. From left, Branch Manager Vincent Amore, Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen, Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin, and Trustco Bank Florida Regional President Eric Shreck.

Palm Coast, FL – While corporate America becomes increasingly distant from Main Street, there are certain businesses that are intentionally striving to maintain a personal relationship with their customers.

Among those is Trustco Bank.

Few things emphasize a local commitment like hiring someone who knows and loves their community, and as the newest branch of the Trustco Bank family celebrated it’s grand opening on Monday in Palm Coast, it was the homegrown handshake of Vincent Amore that was ready to greet the community.

A proud moment as mom Dianna Niskala stands with son Vincent Amore, during the official grand opening of the Palm Coast Trustco Bank branch on Monday, October 25, 2021.

A Matanzas High School graduate, Amore is known as a baseball player, team builder and family man.  Amore’s mother Dianna Niskala, and wife Rebecca beamed with pride as the red ribbon was officially cut.

“This means the world to him,” said Rebecca Amore.  “He has taken every step towards being here today to show everybody what it is to be a branch manager of a bank. Trustco has given him the opportunity so we can all be together and build Palm Coast to be the best it can be.”

“Today has marked probably one of the greatest days in our lives together,” she said.

The couple relocated from Orlando where Amore honed his professional banking skills, back to their hometown to open up the new Trustco Bank.

“I’m very proud of him. He’s come along way and I know he worked hard to get this branch in Palm Coast,” said mom Dianna Niskala.

While rapid growth may have changed the census numbers, Amore says the core values that make Flagler County special have not.

“I have seen this community grow faster than any community I’ve ever been a part of, but what has always been fascinating to me is how intimate and passionate the people of Palm Coast have remained for their community, as if it were the community of 20 years ago,” said Amore.

Flagler Broadcasting’s Vice President and General Manager David Ayres is joined by DJ Laura Z and Trustco Bank General Counsel Michael Hall for the official grand opening of the Palm Coast Trustco Bank branch on Monday, October 25, 2021.

“I truly believe it’s something that I will never see in another community for years to come. It is something that Eric Shreck, our Florida Regional President and I have agreed on since I started with the company almost 5 years ago – it’s that same hometown neighborhood passion that our company has believed in and will continue to believe in for the next 120 years.”

Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen and Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin marked the occasion with speeches celebrating the importance of maintaining the vitality of small businesses and the next generation of young professionals.

“I’m here to welcome Trustco Bank which has offered to become a community partner and to engage themselves fully and totally with our residents. They’ve even taken the door off of their manager’s office to show that they have an open door policy,” said Alfin.

“They’ve chosen a local resident, a young man who grew up here and knows our community like the back of his hand to be their manager. I can’t think of a better way – these are the young people we keep talking about that are the tip of the spear that are coming back to the City of Palm Coast and we will work with them and make that happen.”

While the event drew leadership from New York to take part in the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebrations, it was the support of the Flagler County locals – from the caterers at Swillerbees serving up their craft donuts and the bountiful feast from Carabba’s, to the staff at Trustco Bank who welcomed each guest through the doors like family, that made the day especially meaningful.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the love and support of the community and how we all came together for an amazing grand opening,” said Amore. “Without a doubt this grand opening has definitely made our staff and myself unbelievably grateful for the community that we have.”

Enjoying lunch from Carabba’s, guests attend the official grand opening of the Palm Coast Trustco Bank branch on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Florida Regional President Eric Schreck said it’s the personal, local connection Trustco Bank offers customers that has defined their corporate culture and community banking model since opening the very first branch in Schenectady, New York in 1902.

“In my opinion, it’s the ability to bump into someone in a Publix on a Sunday and just chit chat or see someone out at dinner. I think that makes a big difference in a community bank, and the service we provide,” shared Schreck.

Trustco Bank Florida Regional President Eric Shreck welcomes guests to the official grand opening of the Palm Coast Trustco Bank branch on Monday, October 25, 2021.

“Technology has been great for banking and people in general but it has created a little bit of a disconnect between face-to-face customer service, and we recognize that. While we have all the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect with technology, we still have that face-to-face experience for the customer. We want our staff to be accessible.”

“I’ve wanted to have a branch in Palm Coast for years and was thrilled to finally be able to find one.”

Located in the Palm Coast Landing shopping plaza adjacent to the Target Super Center in Palm Coast, find out more by visiting www.trustcobank.com or stopping into the new branch, at 120 Palm Coast Parkway, Suite 28 in Palm Coast.

FCSO Arrests 11-Year-Old Student who Filed False Report of an Active School Shooter for 2nd Time

On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) responded to a call about a possible active shooter at Rymfire Elementary School. The Sheriff’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received a call from a juvenile on the school premises advising there was a shooter in the school, claiming her name was “Andy Caor” and that multiple shots were heard.

The caller advised there was an active shooter in a classroom and when the 9-1-1 communication specialist asked to speak to the teacher, the caller hung up. The school was placed into a Code Red for the safety of students and faculty. This resulted in a massive response by FCSO and the Palm Coast and Flagler County Fire-Rescue Department’s to the school and the school went in to a Code Red lockdown.

The School Resource Deputy immediately responded to the classroom. He and the school’s vice principal did not hear anything consistent with gunfire nor did other school staff. The teacher, whose classroom the call came from, stated he did not hear or see anything matching the report of a school shooter. Deputies searched every area of the campus.

An investigation was conducted and the school was able to identify that the phone the 9-1-1 call was placed from belonged to a student. It was determined the student from the September 2nd false report of a shooting at Rymfire Elementary was the same student in this incident.

“This student has not learned that you cannot and should not make false reports as we have previously arrested her for a similar call,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We take all threats very seriously and this “prank” resulted in a massive response, taking deputies and fire fighters away from real calls and costing taxpayers a lot of money. Threats are not a joke and false reports are not a prank! Obviously, this child has serious issues and is crying out for attention and help, but this is not the way to get it.”

The juvenile was arrested and transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. She’s was arrested for Making a False Report of a Shooting, Misuse of 9-1-1 System, and Disruption of a School Function. The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) released her into her parent’s custody.
