Here’s some valuable career advice.

It’s okay to go to work in a dysfunctional organization as long as you are on the turnaround team and there is a successful transformation. In fact, it can be a career maker.

However, if you go to work for or remain in a dysfunctional organization for a substantial period of time and it does not significantly improve, this will become a major impediment to your career. The dysfunctional entity will be the image of you in the heads of future potential employers who are interviewing you whether they say so or not.

Like it or not, success sells and your employer becomes your brand. If you are associated with successful organizations, people will perceive you to be a high performer. Conversely, if you are tied to dysfunctional or failing organizations who have negative images, this becomes your brand. You will become unemployable by high performing organizations. Of course, if you are a low performer, this may not present a problem.

Choose your employer carefully. Your employer does define you. Why? Because people hire themselves. The only time a dysfunctional organization hires, promotes, or retains a star is because there’s new leadership who is transforming this enterprise. Prospective employers know and understand this reality.

Where you work now influences where you can work later. This decision determines which future professional opportunities you will or will not have.
