BUNNELL, Fla. – Celebrate Women’s Equality Day, August 26, with the Flagler Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for a special FREE presentation of “How Women Won The Vote.” Join us at the Bunnell Library @ Nexus Center at 3 pm to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment which legally granted American women the right to vote.
Learn about the decades of activism by nationally known leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as well as local suffragist Alice Scott Abbott. The organized movement began with the first Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. The session resulted in the Declaration of Sentiments, a document modeled after the Declaration of Independence, now enjoying its 250th anniversary.
In 1973 Congress passed a joint resolution officially establishing Women’s Equality Day to honor both suffrage achievements and the ongoing struggle for full gender equality. While progress has been made the need for civic participation continues as we work to promote education as a pathway to economic empowerment and representation.
In the words of Susan B. Anthony, “Men, their rights, and nothing more. Women, their rights, and nothing less.”
