June 6, 2024 – The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners will hold a workshop at 1 p.m. Monday (June 10) to further discuss beach nourishment funding. No decision has been made.

The topic was included as a topic in the June 3 workshop as part of the budget preparation discussions without any intention to make an immediate decision.

“There has been some reporting that the proposal made by the Public Financial Management Group during our last workshop (June 3) is almost a guarantee, and that the county is just waiting for approval from the cities,” said County Administrator Heidi Petito.

“That was the first time our commission had been presented with that information. We still have work to do. We recognize the importance of thoroughly examining all aspects of any new initiative before moving forward.”

The commission has requested a comparison of what other coastal communities have done in similar situations. The goal is to gather information about the fair and equitable application of any proposed changes to provide clarity to commissioners as they further analyze the options.

The Public Financial Management Group was hired to conduct a funding study to test the community’s interest in the program and its willingness to contribute financially to support the maintenance of the 18 miles of beaches in Flagler County. The June 3 workshop was intended to review its survey results, and to initiate discussion with the Board of County Commissioners about its recommendation for generating a dedicated funding source for the Beach Management Program.

“Workshops are where commissioners have the opportunity to discuss and evaluate recommendations – weigh the pros and cons,” Petito said. “It was an initial presentation. Currently, further research and evaluation are needed to fully understand the implications and potential outcomes of any decisions.”

The workshop, which will be held at 1 p.m. June 10 in the Commission Chambers (1769 E. Moody Blvd., Building 2, first floor, Bunnell), will also be streamed live at www.YouTube.com/FlaglerCounty.
