1. Tell readers a bit about yourself.
I am a medical esthetician at The Dental Spa at Cypress Point and also a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I am very blessed to be able to work in two industries that I love and am very passionate about. I am also the mother of 3 kids that keep me very busy but in my spare time I love to paddle board, run and play golf.
2. How did you get into the skin care industry?
I have always whole heartedly believed that good health begins on the inside and works its way out, and after many years spent working in the health and fitness industry it only seemed natural to expand my focus to include esthetics. After completing the required 260 hours of esthetics school and additional hands on medical training programs, my dear friend, Dr. Jessie Bech, who is not only a Dentist but also a cosmetic injector, then offered me a position to join her practice and bring medical grade esthetic treatments and skin care to her patients. After two years of working together combining cosmetics and esthetics our need to expand has come! We are currently in the process of remodeling and adding additional treatment rooms and we are excited to announce that the Grand Opening of the “new” Dental Spa will happen mid February!
3. As a health and wellness professional, how is skin an outer reflection of inner health?
The skin is our protective barrier between the outside environment and our internal organs. When our health, whether it be physical, emotional, or psychological, is at jeopardy our skin can and will reflect signs of this imbalance. Ways of maintaining overall wellness include getting enough rest, eating a healthy and balanced diet and drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, managing stress, self-care, maintaining healthy relationships and participating in activities you enjoy. When a healthy balance is happening on all of these levels the skin will respond by reflecting that good health.
4. There was an interesting photo of a peel by Dr. Jesse Bech recently. What is that about and why do those kinds of treatments?
At the Dental Spa, we believe that part of maintaining healthy, youthful skin is not only using good medical grade skin care products at home but also combining that with regular facials and medical grade treatments. The cells in our skin turnover every 28-40 days, which means the dead cells from the surface of the skin are replaced with new healthy cells. As we age this turnover rate slows down dramatically. By doing these regular treatments every 4-6 weeks we actually encourage the turnover to speed up keeping our skin youthful, glowing and fresh. The picture you are referring to is actually of a combination of treatments that we are currently featuring at our spa. Our MicroPeel treatment is our SkinPen microneedling collagen induction therapy combined with one of our medical grade chemical peels. By combining these two very effective clinical treatments we are able to infuse the chemical peel deeper into the skins surface through micro channels produced during microneedling resulting in tighter skin that is even and tone, it reduces fine line and wrinkles, acne scarring and hyperpigmentation.
5. Why is maintenance a little along the way more effective than a big overhaul when it comes to health and wellness?
Rome wasn’t built in a day. In order to achieve and maintain maximum results whether we are referring to health, wellness or esthetics, consistency and discipline is key. When we make it a lifestyle choice to take care of ourselves all around it becomes part of who we are. A person can’t walk into a gym one time and expect to lose weight just as they also can’t come in for one facial and expect a complete change in their skin. These changes take time but I like to remind my clients that its part of the journey. When you train for a race part of your journey becomes the training. Yes, race day is exciting and unforgettable but it was the hours of training that really brought you there. When I consult with clients I often ask them to examine their daily regimen. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you making healthy food choices and drinking water? Are you exercising regularly? Are you using your skin care products daily? These daily choices are all part of our “training” and if we remain consistent and disciplined our overall health will show it from the inside out.
