Governor Ron DeSantis Demands Biden-Harris Administration Cease Any Further Unlawful Resettlement of Illegal Aliens in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Governor DeSantis demanded that the Biden-Harris administration cease any further resettlement in Florida of the large number of illegal aliens apprehended at the southwest border. These individuals who entered the country illegally have no lawful status under federal immigration law, and the federal government should not facilitate their resettlement in the Sunshine State, hundreds of miles away from the border.

“President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their administration have refused to fulfill their responsibility to enforce immigration laws enacted by Congress and the resulting influx of unvetted illegal aliens endangers our national security and undermines the socioeconomic wellbeing of hardworking American citizens,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Unfortunately, even though the federal government is responsible for immigration enforcement, it is the states who bear the brunt of this administration’s reckless immigration policies.

“I have been to the border and I observed firsthand the chaos that this administration’s policies have created. To fill the void left by the federal government, Florida deployed its own law enforcement officers to the border, and they’ve told me that many of the illegal aliens apprehended there plan to end up in Florida. Floridians welcome responsible immigration that serves the interests of our citizens, but we cannot abide the lawlessness that this administration is aiding and abetting, and frankly encouraging, on the southwest border.”

In a letter sent to the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Governor DeSantis calls attention to the administration’s disastrous immigration policies and requests an end to the mass resettlement of illegal aliens into the United States. At the very least, Governor DeSantis urges the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide more transparency concerning the resettlement of illegal aliens in Florida and to consult in advance with state leadership before illegal aliens are resettled in the state.

The full text of the letter can be found here.

Under the Biden administration’s border policies:

  • The number of encounters at the southwest border have skyrocketed from 78,417 in January 2021 to 212,672 in July 2021, a 171% increase and the highest in more than 20 years.

  • The number of illegal aliens who were issued a notice to appear or order of recognizance and subsequently released by the Border Patrol in July alone was a staggering 59,691, a massive increase from the 1,324 in this category who were released in January. By contrast, in the last full month of the Trump administration, only 17 aliens in this category were released.

Recent decisions in the federal courts blocking the administration’s termination of the “Remain in Mexico” program and its policy of refusing to detain and deport certain criminal aliens confirm Governor DeSantis’ position that the administration’s immigration program is fundamentally lawless and does not comply with federal immigration law.

The letter also requests that DHS provides information to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) no later than September 30, 2021, regarding:

  • the number of illegal aliens resettled in Florida;

  • the names and destination of the illegal aliens;

  • the number of illegal aliens resettled in Florida who were tested for COVID-19 and the results of such tests;

  • the identities of illegal aliens who have criminal records and who have previously entered the U.S. illegally; and

  • the number and identity of illegal aliens resettled in Florida who have failed to appear for their removal proceedings.

Through a mutual aid agreement with the State of Texas and at the direction of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, FDLE, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) deployed agents, officers and support personnel to supplement the Texas Department of Public Safety in Operation Lone Star. During the course of Operation Lone Star, FDLE, FHP, and FWC reported:

  • 9,171 undocumented migrant contacts, including:

o   311 criminal arrests;

o   79 human smuggling cases;

o   16 stolen vehicle cases;

o   43 narcotics cases; and

o   4 drug seizures.

Further, Florida agents interviewed numerous undocumented migrants and, in those conversations, many of the groups indicated their final destination being Florida’s larger cities such as Kissimmee, Orlando, Miami, Hialeah, and Jacksonville.

In April, Governor DeSantis requested that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) take into custody and ultimately remove all illegal alien felons who have completed their prison sentences in Florida. Additionally, Governor DeSantis requests that ICE notify FDLE, as well as local law enforcement agencies, of all such felons released from ICE custody in Florida.

Sheriff Staly Completes 79th Session of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly graduated from the 79th Session of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS). He was selected by the FBI to attend in 2021 and only a very elite group is invited to participate. Just 45 law enforcement executives from around the country were invited to attend the session. Of these, only four Florida police executives were invited to attend.

LEEDS is a two-week program designed for chief executive officers of the nation’s mid-sized law enforcement agencies—those having between 50 and 499 sworn officers and serving a population of 50,000 or more. Executives are provided instruction and facilitation in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, legal issues, labor relations, media relations, social issues, and police programs. Participants have the opportunity to exchange plans, problems, and solutions with their peers, develop new thoughts and ideas and share successes.

“I was honored to have been invited to attend,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “The FBI’s Training Unit provided an outstanding group of instructors on various topics relevant to today’s law enforcement environment.  In fact I have already asked my staff to look into various topics I brought back for implementation at the Sheriff’s Office.  I also recommended a special training class be brought to our area to the Daytona State College Law Enforcement Academy Director.”

Sheriff Staly graduated from the FBI LEEDS program on August 5, 2021, after completing two, one week sessions. The FBI pays 100% of all costs related to this training so there was no cost to local taxpayers.

Old Glory Service Dogs Receives Boost from Flagler RAMS

Flagler County RAMS President Bob Thierwechter and RAMS Club Training Supervisor Tom Kerr present Lauren Driscoll, founder of Old Glory Service Dogs 4 Veterans, Inc. with a $1,000 check on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.

Bunnell, FL – Lauren Driscoll has been known throughout Florida for her work connecting veterans and first responders with PTSD and other disabilities to service dogs for the past five years, under the Paws of War umbrella.

Never straying the mission, Driscoll took a leap of faith by creating Old Glory Service Dogs 4 Veterans, Inc. several months ago, all the while continuing to diligently serve local veterans and generate public awareness for the organization.

The Flagler County-based Old Glory Service Dogs 4 Veterans, Inc. received a boost on Wednesday, August 25th from the Flagler County RAMS (Radio Aero Modelers r/c Club) a Radio Controlled Model Aircraft Club, with a $1,000 donation to help further the mission.

Presenting Driscoll with the check, club president Bob Thierwechter and club training supervisor Tom Kerr were first made aware of Old Glory Service Dogs 4 Veterans, Inc. by Flagler Broadcasting’s Kirk Keller during Freedom Fest. Watching the presentation, he said he was proud to be able to connect the two organizations.

“When Tom called and said they had raised $1,000 for Old Glory, I was on cloud nine,” said Keller. “Old Glory is one of the best causes in Florida, not just for veterans, but for the rescue dogs too.”

Thierwechter was impressed by the cause, and went on to raise an additional $510 from club members for the donation, going above and beyond what had been initially allocated.

“I like the idea of it. It dealt with first responders and veterans and service dogs. To me it’s a very worthwhile investment for the people out there,” said Kerr, who estimates a third of their 125 membership is comprised of veterans.

Serving as a local clearinghouse connector for veterans and first responders in need of a service dog, Driscoll has earned a solid reputation for her work over the years.

“We wanted to keep our mission exactly the same. We rescue dogs, match them up with veterans and first responders. There is no cost for the training, it’s about two years of commitment for the training, and we’re saving dogs and helping veterans and first responders,” said Driscoll, urging applicants to come forward.

“We are looking to get it out there so people can start filling out applications and getting some new people in,” she said.

Previously training new recruits at the Florida Agricultural Museum, Driscoll is looking forward to expanding those served by Old Glory Service Dogs 4 Veterans, Inc. within their brick-and-mortar location at 101 Hibiscus Avenue in Bunnell, just south of Hot Diggity Dogs on US 1, behind Twice-The-Ice.

“We got our own building. It’s not tremendous but it’s doing it’s job,” said Driscoll.  “For me it’s emotional because I put more time into that than anything. They did enough for us, so it’s our turn to give back.”

Community Invited to Participate in Healthcare Appreciation Drive-by this Friday, Aug. 27, 2021

As a continuation of support for our local healthcare workers, the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach, in coordination with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and AdventHealth Palm Coast, is organizing a Community and Sheriff’s Office drive-by to recognize our healthcare heroes and show how much they are appreciated.

“We are exceptionally proud of our Flagler County healthcare workers,” said President of the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach, Alicia Vincent. “Our front line workers have had an unwavering dedication to care for our community members and this type of event is essential in keeping their morale and spirits up,” Alicia added.

The thank you procession parade will be held at two separate times on Friday, August 27, 2021: Noon and 8:00 p.m. The community is encouraged to attend and bring and wave signs of support from their vehicles. Participants are asked to enter the main entrance at AdventHealth Palm Coast, located at 60 Memorial Medical Pkwy, Palm Coast and turn right and drive in a circle around the hospital, past the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House around the back. The healthcare heroes will be watching and waiving from the windows of the hospital. The FSCO will also drive-by with lights and sirens.

This past March, to thank our healthcare heroes, Rotary Clubs of Flagler Beach, Flagler County, Downtown Ormond Beach, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach West and Ponte Vedra Beach organized Rotary Feeding Heroes, an event that supplied 700 free meals to healthcare heroes in Volusia and Flagler Counties. The meals were donated by Tortuga’s Florida Kitchen and Bar, Beachfront Grille, Oceanside Beach Bar & Grill, Martin’s Restaurant, and Terranova’s Restaurant and Pizzeria. This is the second installation of Rotary Feeding Heroes – in September 2020, the Rotary District 6970 Alumni Association provided 100 meals to staff at UF Health Shands Hospital in Jacksonville.
