Community Connections Shine at Successful Connecting to Palm Coast Expo

Palm Coast, FL—The Palm Coast Community Center was full of energy and excitement on the evening of Wednesday, May 7, as vendors and residents gathered for the spring edition of the Connecting to Palm Coast Expo. Organized by the Palm Coast Citizens Academy Alumni Ambassadors, the event brought together a vibrant mix of city departments, non-profits, civic groups, and local partners—all eager to welcome new residents and strengthen community ties.

Building on the success of the inaugural event in January, this second installment of the expo once again proved to be a powerful platform for connection and engagement. From essential city services to cultural organizations and volunteer groups, the expo featured 40 booths filled with resources, smiles, and opportunities.

City and County representatives from eight key departments—including Utility, Customer Service, Stormwater, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, the Supervisor of Elections, Tax Collector, and Property Appraiser—were on hand to answer questions and help residents better understand the services available to them.

Local nonprofits and family services groups such as the Family Life Center, Flagler Cares, Vincent’s Clubhouse, and Furnishing Hope showcased how they’re making a difference in the community. Civic organizations like the AAUW, University Women of Flagler, and I Just Want to Say Women’s Group encouraged residents to get involved and make lasting connections.

Arts, culture, and tourism were well represented, with the Flagler County Cultural Center, Palm Coast Historical Society, and the Hispanic American Cultural Society sharing ways to celebrate the area’s rich heritage. Safety and senior services groups—including Crime Stoppers, Seniors vs. Crime, and the Florida Inland Navigation District—offered valuable insights for keeping Palm Coast safe and informed.

Clubs and service organizations like the Rotary Club, Palm Coast Rowing Club, Elks Lodge, and Lions Club invited attendees to get involved, volunteer, or take part in community events. First responders from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and Mosquito Control District were also present to engage with residents and promote public safety.

Local businesses such as The Observer and Brave Aide showed their support, rounding out a strong network of partners all working toward a shared goal: building a stronger, more connected Palm Coast.

“Our Citizens Academy Alumni Ambassadors did an outstanding job organizing and facilitating another successful expo,” said Brittany Kershaw, Director of Communications and Marketing for the City of Palm Coast. “We’re so grateful to all the vendors who participated and to the residents who braved the rainy weather to come out, connect with their community, and learn more about all the resources available in Palm Coast. Events like this truly showcase the spirit of service and engagement that make our city so special.”

For those who missed the expo, the next Connecting to Palm Coast Expo is already scheduled for Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Palm Coast Community Center. Mark your calendars and don’t miss this opportunity to get connected, get informed, and get involved in your community!

Flagler County extends the burn ban until May 14 to protect against wildfire threat

May 7, 2025 – Though some areas of Flagler County started receiving rain on Wednesday, officials are extending the countywide burn ban for an additional seven days given the persistent dry conditions.

“Until such time as we have accumulated enough rainfall, countywide, that significantly reduces the drought index, we will need to leave the Burn Ban in place,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “Additional rain is forecast, so we’ll hope for the best.”

The burn ban prohibits the following:

Discharge/use of fireworks, sparklers, flares, or other items containing any “explosive compound”
Open burning, including the use of fire pits and containers
Outdoor cookers and grills unless continuously attended by an adult
Throwing matches, cigarettes, or other burning materials from vehicles
Parking vehicles with catalytic converters in high grassy areas

The rule of thumb for taking personal protective measures, accepted by a variety of fire prevention agencies, including the National Fire Protection Association, is that all flammable items within 30 feet of a structure should be removed. Homeowners should clear roofs, eaves, gutters, wood decks and patios of leaves, needles, and other debris.

“Additionally, do not store things under decks or porches, and consider using rocks or gravel in those areas instead grass or mulch,” said Fire Chief Michael Tucker. “Wood-driven fires, like brushfires, create embers that can be carried quite far, and tend to find their way to the same nooks and crannies where leaves accumulate.”

Barbecue coals should be fully extinguished before adding them to garbage receptacles.

“Please take this burn ban seriously,” Tucker said. “We want everyone to stay safe.”

To see the entirety of the burn ban restrictions, please visit www.FlaglerCounty.gov/emergency and click on Emergency Notices.

Buddy Taylor Middle SeaPerch Teams Make Headlines, Once Again Qualify for International Competition

(Flagler County, Fla.) – Buddy Taylor Middle School (BTMS) SeaPerch Advisor Tracy Jones continues to inspire her Eagles to new heights. However, for the BTMS SeaPerch program, their latest global adventure will hardly be uncharted waters for the Flagler Schools underwater robotics designers.

BTMS seventh-grade students James Webb and Alexander Mangal turned their most recent performance into a berth into the International SeaPerch Competition being held at the University of Maryland on May 31 and June 1. Their second place finish at the Greater Jacksonville SeaPerch Regional Competition April 13 earned “Team Swift Sharks” one of the coveted spots. BTMS student Luke Chrzanowski will also be attending as an alternate.

Teams invited to the international competition are considered to be among the Top 5% in the world. Just one year ago, BTMS students Lucas Strunk, Sophia Costa and Nathan Cabrera Delombard (Team Manta Rays) also earned a spot at the international competition after their performance on the regional level last spring.

“This program aims to teach students engineering skills in a fun and creative setting,” Jones said. “Using only the materials provided in their kits, students are challenged to design and build their entries from the ground up.”

SeaPerch is a program designed to teach students how to construct Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) to work underwater. SeaPerch introduces students to basic engineering, design and science concepts involving robotics. As a fun hands-on project, SeaPerch engages students and fosters key 21st century skills including critical thinking, collaboration and creativity.

This year, the BTMS SeaPerch program shared a community outreach effort at Water Safety Day at the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club. In shedding light on the number of drownings each year, SeaPerch students constructed a project that shared the dangers of certain bathing suit colors and their visibility in pools versus open water.

Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches Tourism Development Office Marks National Tourism and Travel Week

(Bunnell, Fla.)—Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches Tourism Development Office received a proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners, recognizing National Tourism and Travel Week (NTTW), the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry, May 4-10, 2025. The week shines a spotlight on the U.S. travel industry’s essential role in driving economic growth, creating jobs and enhancing the nation’s global competitiveness.

Travel and tourism significantly affect the economy of Flagler County. According to the Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches 2024 Economic Impact Report conducted by Downs and St. Germain Research,  tourism in Flagler County supported more than 9,700 jobs, generated over 890 million in total economic impact, and brought in over $4.3 million in bed tax revenue in 2024. This tax is a catalyst for stimulating tourism-related activity that leads to increased collections from sales, property, and other local taxes.

“Tourism is the lifeline of our local economy and it’s important to keep in mind that there is an additional economic impact from visitors beyond their direct spending. Businesses that serve visitors recirculate visitors’ spending by buying goods and services to run their business along with employees spending their wages in the community,” said Amy Lukasik, Executive Director for Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches.

Flagler County welcomed more than 940,000 visitors in 2024. Those visitors generated more than $617,703,400 in direct spending. The number accounts for sales in accommodations, restaurants, groceries, transportation, attractions, entertainment, and shopping in Flagler County.

“Travel drives economic opportunity and strengthens our community,” said Lukasik. “This National Travel and Tourism Week, we celebrate travel’s undeniable impact and reaffirm its importance in shaping our local economy and quality of life.”

Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares Announce Investigation into Loudoun County Public Schools

RICHMOND, VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares today expressed outrage over reports that Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is investigating three male students who complained about the presence of a biological female in the boys’ locker room. Reports indicate that the female student, who identifies as male, used her cell phone to record the reaction of male students after she entered the boys’ locker room. Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Miyares also announced that Attorney General Miyares will investigate the school division’s conduct.

“It’s deeply concerning to read reports of yet another incident in Loudoun County schools where members of the opposite sex are violating the privacy of students in locker rooms. Even more alarming, the victims of this violation are the ones being investigated—this is beyond belief. I’ve asked Attorney General Miyares to investigate this situation immediately so that every student’s privacy, dignity and safety are upheld,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Students who express legitimate concerns about sharing locker rooms with individuals of the opposite biological sex should not be subjected to harassment or discrimination claims. Two years ago, my administration issued model policies that (1) unless federal law requires otherwise, require students to use the locker room corresponding to their sex, and (2) require parental notification if a student is permitted to use a locker room that differs from their biological sex and allow parents to opt their child out and use alternative facilities. Parental rights are not negotiable.”

“This is just the latest example of what happens when school boards disregard common sense. The safety, dignity, and privacy of every student in Virginia should be non-negotiable. This is about safety and privacy, not political correctness — and it’s time Loudoun County recognized that,” said Attorney General Jason Miyares.

2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend Moves to Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 6-8

MIAMI, Fla. (May 6, 2025) – NASCAR announced today that the 2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend, featuring the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, will be held at Homestead-Miami Speedway to conclude the 2026 season. This will be the first time since 2019 that NASCAR’s three national series will crown their champions at the South Florida racetrack.

The announcement marks a Homestead homecoming for the conclusion to the NASCAR Playoffs, as the track previously hosted the NASCAR Championship from 2002 to 2019. NASCAR Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be held on Nov. 6-8, 2026.

As part of this shift, the NASCAR Championship Weekend will move to a new rotating model as part of a fan-centric effort to ensure that the season’s exciting conclusion is shared amongst NASCAR’s marquee venues and key markets. Similar to other major sports championships, NASCAR will showcase its championship weekend on the new rotating model to provide greater exposure for its season’s finale in multiple markets.

“Homestead-Miami Speedway has a history of competitive, championship racing that will provide nostalgia for veteran drivers and fans and exhilaration for NASCAR’s new generation,” said Ben Kennedy, EVP, Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer. “As we move forward, the rotating model will provide new challenges for competitors as well as opportunities for unique venues to host our loyal fans at NASCAR Championship Weekend.”

“As we celebrate our 30th season, it is fitting we will start our next decade returning to our championship roots at Homestead-Miami Speedway,” said Guillermo Santa Cruz, Homestead-Miami Speedway President. “The 2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend will offer the brightest young stars of the sport the opportunity to join the illustrious 18-year history of championship racing in South Florida alongside veteran fan-favorite drivers.”

Three active drivers who were crowned Cup Series champions at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be hoping that history repeats itself in 2026 – Kyle Busch of Richard Childress Racing (2015, 2019), Brad Keselowski of RFK Racing (2012), and Joey Logano of Team Penske (2018). Logano has also added two championships at Phoenix Raceway (2022, 2024).

Phoenix Raceway has been a model racetrack hosting NASCAR Championship Weekend with sellouts and an unparalleled fan experience since 2020. As part of the 2026 NASCAR schedule, Phoenix Raceway will continue to host two Cup Series race dates and be a part of the NASCAR Championship as it will continue to host a prominent race in the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs. Those dates will be announced in the near future. The racetrack will also be included in the championship rotation, so NASCAR Championship Weekend will return to conclude a future season.
