Unlikely Winners Blaney and Kligerman Close NASCAR Regular Season in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona International Speedway produced back-to-back races this past weekend as Parker Kligerman and Ryan Blaney scored victories in the final race of the Xfinity and Cup Series regular season.

On Friday night, Parker Kligerman climbed into Connor Zilisch’s No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet on Lap 13 after the 19-year-old stepped out to protect a broken collarbone. Kligerman controlled the Wawa 250 through two overtimes, surviving a final-lap crash that froze the field and delivered JR Motorsports a top 3 finish sweep with Sammy Smith and Justin Allgaier.

“It’s weird,” Zilisch said. “It was really weird the last time I did it, and I never thought I’d have to do it again… But I love Parker. I’ve been a fan of Parker for a long time. He’s another one I’m OK watching win inside my race car.

“I’m glad that I got to start the race and get the points for my team.”

Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 ended with another photo finish. Blaney surged from 12th in the final three laps and edged Daniel Suarez by 0.031 seconds, with Justin Haley a close third. The victory, Blaney’s 15th, vaulted him to second in regular-season points and secured Alex Bowman the final playoff berth after Bowman’s crash earlier in the race left his hopes hanging on a non-winner.

“What a wild last couple laps, honestly,” Blaney said. “I was with Cole, I kind of asked him on the restart, if you go to the top I’m going with you. We kind of just waited and waited and then the opportunity came, and he made a good move to get to the top, and we were able to really get good shoves.”

Blaney sealed the deal with an uncharacteristic burnout, celebrating what he deemed the breaking of a curse.

“The last two laps we had was pretty awesome. How we came from lap 14th or wherever we were to get the lead. I didn’t know if we got it initially, at first, the burnout stuff’s kind of aw man, it’s so cool to win here. It was a big night,” he said.

“Also, I mainly did it for Advance Auto Parts because that paint scheme at speedways has been cursed. I’ve gotten right hooked with that scheme more times than I can count. The CEO, Shane (O’Kelly), told me tonight ‘I think we paid our dues with that paint scheme at speedways. I got a really good feeling tonight.’ It was super cool to pay that off and have him here and their whole team here to see us. It was a big night. It was cool a lot of things just culminating and I thought it deserved one.”

Leadership Lessons with Dr. Saviak … A Commitment to Continuous Growth During Your Career

What’s a wonderful way to have a lasting and fulfilling career?  It is to concentrate on continuously growing yourself and others professionally.

Leaders and professionals take advantage of opportunities to gain greater knowledge, sharpen key skills, and acquire new credentials and professional experiences.  Obtaining a college degree or professional certification, participating in a professional association, spending time with mentors, taking or teaching a class or professional seminar, reading or listening to specific books, perusing articles, watching videos, accessing podcasts and webinars, engaging in  cross-training opportunities, and taking on new and different roles and responsibilities are examples of high value activities leaders provide and professionals access.

Organizations need to have leadership, a culture, and a team which supports and encourages growth as professionals and leaders.  Employees may be incentivized to engage in leadership and professional development with opportunities for better job performance, increased pay, college tuition reimbursement, access to on-the-job training, and being more competitive for promotions.

For example, a college education can be conducive to professional opportunities and career success.  Of course, it is true that a college degree does not necessarily mean someone is talented or even competent.  The reasons senior management wants members of the team to have either earned or be working to obtain their college degrees while on the job for specific positions are: acquiring subject matter knowledge relevant to the current or future job, sharpening key skills which are beneficial in employment and management, it shows commitment to self-improvement and dedication towards achieving goals, and it aids in future promotional opportunities.

The key is the right degree for your specific professional goals. It is goal first, degree second. Affordability, the faculty and curriculum, time to completion, graduation requirements, and the quality and reputation of the institution and degree program also matter.

Involvement in a professional association has a demonstrated return on investment.  Professional associations enable us to access new knowledge from others in our industry such as best practices and learn about resources and tools which can aid in productivity and performance.  Participation presents opportunities to interact with leaders and professionals from different organizations and build relationships to access their counsel.  There are opportunities to manage projects and serve in leadership roles which help build the right skill set for supervisors and managers in their organizations.  In fact, a key metric of organizational success is if employees are active and assuming leadership roles in regional, state, and national professional associations.

A third professionally productive focus for leaders is to work with members of their team on specific and individualized professional and leadership development plans and aid them in strategies for career growth.  Optimizing their opportunities to experience rewarding careers through a well-planned professional path aids in employee performance, productivity, and retention.  Managers and supervisors should seek to  identify employee strengths to solidify and areas for improvement to help team members fulfill their potential.

Professionals, supervisors, and managers should be promoted and evaluated on the key metric of how much they do to aid themselves and those they lead and work with to thrive and excel.  The executive or manager who does not concentrate on this critical role should not last in leadership in the right type of organization.

The reality is that times change and what you knew at the start of your career is unlikely to explain everything as you progress in your profession, especially in the 21st century.  Lifelong learning is not a suggestion, but it is really a requirement.

Jack Welch once observed about leadership that “you have to love it when other people win.”  Your job as a leader is to help make sure they do.  Lastly, be your own career manager to experience and enjoy the career which matters most to you.

Senior Expo Focuses on Enhanced Quality of Life for Flagler’s Residents

AdventHealth Palm Coast. Flagler News Weekly

PALM COAST, Fla. – Offering seniors everything from medical resources, financial planning, and final resting places to chiropractic and massage services, home accessories, and entertainment, the 8th annual Senior Health & Wellness Expo was soup to nuts at the Palm Coast Community Center Friday morning.

Organized by Flagler Broadcasting and sponsored by AdventHealth, the expo has grown in size over the years with an aim to offer everything Flagler’s seniors could need under one roof.

“In 1981 President Ronald Reagan declared this week National Senior Citizens Week to honor senior citizens because the seniors in our country, especially this county, mean a lot to us,” said organizer Kirk Keller, Vice President of Events and Marketing for Flagler Broadcasting.

“Our average age in this county is 61 years old, and the majority of us, and I’m in that category to, are senior citizens. This senior expo really highlights a lot of programs that are available for seniors,” he said.

“From reverse mortgages that are very important to seniors, to blood sugar, which mine was very high today, and there’s a vision test here and mine is spot on to what my doctor says, it’s very important to have these things done,” added Keller, who claimed his wife hoped he’d have a hearing test for his ‘selective hearing’.

Talking with attendees, Seniors Helping Seniors’ Mike Walters was happy to connect with the community and share more about his company’s services.

“It was important for me personally to be here today because of how fast we’re growing. I was just telling someone that it’s nice to meet the people in the community, see what we’re doing, hear the impact that we’re all making on people. It kind of grounds you. It gets you out of the numbers and into the people,” said Walters.

He hopes that in a community caring for aging spouses or parents, that residents will reach out for support sooner rather than later.

“Be aware of resources,” said Walters. “There’s help out there. One of the key things I see when I’m talking with loved ones that are looking for help is they’re usually at their wits end by the time they reach out to us. It’s like a spouse and you feel it’s your responsibility to take care of that spouse because you’ve been married for five decades, or your parents who have done so much for you and you feel like I appreciate that, I see the love. The amount of love that I see for other people is tremendous I think that it’s important to know that it’s okay to ask for help too. You deserve it too.”

Keller was overwhelmed by the appreciation shown by seniors attending the expo.

“I’ve seen so many seniors today that said thank you, thank you, thank you, I did not know this,” he said.

Keller was quick to remind people that it’s not all health and wellness and small changes can make a big difference.

“Some things are just for fun, like The Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center, offering special programs for seniors today. It’s one of the things seniors here love to do,” he said.

“BEDTOPS Mattress is here and they’ve got mattresses specially designed for seniors and they’ve got discounts today. I just love this event. It’s all about learning and being more comfortable. The more you know about stuff the more comfortable you are and that’s what we want to do, make our seniors more comfortable and enhance their quality of life.”

Thou Shalt Not Wreck Your Teammate … Final Race of the Regular Season Drives Daytona This Weekend

Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher answers questions in the Godwin Kelly Deadline Room at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, August 22, 2025. Flagler News Weekly

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – What would you do to win?

Thou shalt not wreck your teammate seems like gospel at the track.

A few Cup Series drivers shared just how far they would go to take the win just 24 hours before the Coke Zero Sugar 400.

It was among the questions fielded by the No. 12 Team Penske Ford driver Ryan Blaney, and the 2023 Cup Series Champion handled it with finesse and a chuckle.

“I guess that is how you define ‘screw over’. You know, like. If I have a chance to go win, I’m going to go win the race. I’m not going to layover for another fellow Ford whether it’s Front Row or RFK like I’m not going to go layover for them to win the race and get in when I have a shot to win the race. You know? So, I’m going to race them hard like normal but I’m also going to help them in situations like normal.”

Ryan Blaney answers questions in the Godwin Kelly Deadline Room at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, August 22, 2025. Flagler News Weekly

Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing’s No. 60 Ryan Preece showed a teamwork attitude sitting side by side with teammate Chris Buescher.

“Chris and I, it’s an easy genuine relationship to have as far as not just a working relationship but just very similar interests. When we’re around each other it’s not a competitive nature of man, I need to beat my teammate, it’s hey what can I do to help him, just as I assume when he’s around me, I notice that same reciprocation of whenever I need help, he helps me. Or if I catch him at a mile and a half or whatever, he doesn’t make it very difficult for me to get by. He’ll help me as I feel you do for Brad, and I do for Brad, and Brad does for us.”

Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher answers questions in the Godwin Kelly Deadline Room at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, August 22, 2025. Flagler News Weekly

Chris Buescher, the No. 17 racer for Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing didn’t mince words.

“Ultimately there is only ever one winner. Every time you come into a speedway race and you work with your teammates, you always have the mindset of push each other and get each other as far as possible until there’s no cars left to pass and then you work it out amongst yourselves, right? I still say that there’s no doubt in my mind that you come off of Turn 4 and you’ve hung with each other all day, then all bets are off at that point. Or maybe earlier, I don’t know. But you know what, it’ll be a race. I think the normal teammate, I don’t know, you could say agreement, mindset is you’ve got to race each other hard but be respectful about it.”

In the playoffs, there’s not too much pressure on William Byron. The No. 24 Chevy driver for Hendrick Motorsports already has the 2024 Cup Series Championship to his name. While sitting at number one in the points standing as of Friday night, it doesn’t mean he’s lost his edge when it comes to winning.

“Obviously we want to win. That would help them as well. We just try to go out there and win but you have to be really mindful of you know helping a teammate, so it’s very double-edged sword. I want to make sure I’m making moves to advance myself forward, not advancing somebody else forward. Yeah, I think it’s learning from previous races. This package, as easy as it is to say hey, I don’t want to help somebody else, you’re kind of boxed in. This is pretty much a two-by-two race. You’re pretty much pushing whoever’s in front of you and that’s how you go forward. So how do you separate ok, I want to go forward versus I want to help my teammate.”

As race fans know, anything can happen at the Daytona International Speedway. Fans will have to keep an eye on the Coke Zero Sugar 400 kicking off at 7:30 PM, Saturday night.

Bookworm Vending Machine Opens Door of Opportunity Thanks to Erik Jones Foundation and AdventHealth

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Reading is a super power, and it’s only fitting that the first young reader to receive a book from Flagler County’s very first Bookworm vending machine at Rymfire Elementary on Friday courtesy of the Erik Jones Foundation should be a young Jedi.

Jedi Vanway, that is.

Placing his gold token in the vending machine that was lit up like a Dave & Buster’s video game in the school’s cafeteria, the machine’s robotic voice announced, “one book, coming right up” drawing awe from the crowd as they stood watching in anticipation while the bookworm dispensed a book for the eager youngster.

A rally of cheers went up as NASCAR driver Erik Jones stood next to Jedi, watching the book drop.

A Leg Up with Literacy

A lifelong reader, No. 43 Legacy Motor Club driver Erik Jones recalled a book about The Wright Brothers as one of his earliest favorites. His love of reading has carried into adulthood and Jones looked for a way to connect reading to the sport’s fanbase.

Jones said it started in COVID, when they did some readings online virtually, noting how it caught on with the kids and kid’s books.

NASCAR driver Erik Jones reads to the students at Rymfire Elementary School/

“When we kind of got back into live, normal appearances we learned about these book vending machines through my foundation early on. Children’s literacy was high on our list, so we found pretty quick the kids were really excited about the vending machines when we donated them, and it really got them really excited about wanting to earn these books, so we started to push to donate more and more,” he recalled.

Partnering with AdventHealth on this delivery, Jones said they had been able to place these free reading opportunities across the nation.

“I’ve done a few all over. We’ve done some in Volusia with Advent, I’ve done some on my own with my foundation in Michigan. We done them kind of all over, so it’s been fun,” said Jones.

“As I started to get more into literacy and get more into it, I didn’t realize I guess how low the literacy rate in our country was, not just for kids but also for adults, and that starts in childhood, so it’s just kind of a free token to excel. If you’re a strong reader and proficient early it really gives you a jump start on your education, and really life.”

AdventHealth looks at the opportunity to support literacy not only as a way to help the community but serves as an investment in tomorrow’s future workforce according to Yuri Pashchuk, Associate Chief Nursing Officer for AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway.

“As a dad, I have two little ones myself, and this is a personal event for me as well,” said Pashchuk.

AdventHealth Associate Chief Nursing Officer Yuri Pashchuk hypes up the crowd.

“I’m so proud of AdventHealth partnering, going outside of our forte which is health care to partner with drivers like Erik Jones and be able to extend resources into the community. Part of this partnership allows us to build not only relationships but build pathways and open up doors for students who may have never considered career options in healthcare. This helps us bridge that gap, and literacy is the key to everything,” he said.

The Foundation of It All

Reading literacy is a fundamental pillar of the Flagler County Education Foundation and Flagler Schools’ mission. Rymfire Elementary School Principal Travis Lee said his school has taken the approach to challenge parents to read nightly with their children.

“It is exciting to be chosen. We have a focus on literacy and we’ve had a great amount of growth over the last three years in our literacy scores and encouraging our students to read nightly. We have family commitments tied to reading nightly for 30 minutes. It’s really helped us. This will definitely coincide with the opportunity for students to have free books,” said Lee.

He hopes the opportunity to meet a professional athlete will cement the moment for the students and inspire them to read more.

“I think about myself as an elementary student and I never met a professional sports talent, so to have somebody come to school and share their love for reading, I think it will make a huge impression on our students and hopefully ignite that fire for reading,” he said.

Rymfire’s lead media specialist Rebecca Tomes and literacy coach Caryn Taylor were thrilled by the addition of the bookwork vending machine to the campus.

“The kids are already excited about it. We’ve been talking about it already, we’ve been talking about how they can earn tokens and get a book,” said Tomes.

“We look for all opportunities to motivate our kids to read,” said Taylor, who shared that for some kids, this will be their very first new book.

Sneak Peek with Caryn Taylor, Abra Seay and Rebecca Tomes at Rymfire Elementary School.

Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore is excited to see the expansion of the AdventHealth partnership with Flagler Schools.

“It is so critical. There is so much research and data that supports how literacy impacts success in life. We just appreciate Advent, the partnership. I know this is the first vending machine but you know they’ve been a longtime partner here in Flagler Schools and we appreciate all that they do for us,” said Moore.

Eager to ask questions, Rymfire Elementary School students talk with Erik Jones, NASCAR driver.

“When a festival of this scale invests back into the community, it’s about more than music — it’s about impact,” said David Weis, regional president and CEO for AdventHealth‘s operations in east Volusia, Flagler and St. Johns counties. “Just as Rockville unites fans from around the world, this gift helps unite us in building a healthier future right here in Daytona Beach.”
