August 8, 2025 – Flagler County officials advise residents that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has activated a “Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon” at the intersection of State Road A1A and South 3rd Street in Flagler Beach to enhance pedestrian safety by helping people cross the busy roadway and increasing driver awareness of the crosswalk.

The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon remains dark until pedestrians activate it by pushing a button on the signal pole.

Once activated, the beacon alerts drivers to slow down by flashing yellow followed by a period of solid yellow. It will then turn solid red, like a stoplight, indicating motorists must stop to allow pedestrians to safely cross the street, according to an FDOT news release. The beacon will then flash red, to signal that drivers can proceed IF the roadway is clear of pedestrians.

Motorists are asked to “stay alert and use caution” when approaching the new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons as pedestrians and motorists alike need to adjust to the new signals.
