HASTINGS, Fla. — Something suspicious is on the menu in Hastings — and it’s not the chef’s secret ingredient.

This Halloween weekend, trade the usual dinner date for a trip to a 1928 speakeasy, where the music swings, secrets simmer and someone has a motive for murder.

Catalyst Theatre, in partnership with The Venue – Hastings, will present “The Gilded Cage: An Immersive Mystery Dinner” on Friday, Oct. 30. Featuring nine local actors and a live three-piece band performing period-inspired music, the original production places guests right in the middle of the intrigue. Clues emerge around the dining room, characters draw diners into the story and unexpected twists keep everyone guessing.

Consider it date night with a side of detective work.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception and passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a three-course dinner prepared by chef Ellie Shultze. A St. Augustine native trained at the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City, Shultze brings global influences and an emphasis on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to the table.

While the chef handles the courses, guests can work on cracking the case.

“‘The Gilded Cage’ is the perfect Halloween night out for anyone looking for a little mystery with their dinner,” said Sherrie Provence, artistic director and founder of Catalyst Theatre. “With live music, a three-course meal and characters drawing you into the story, it’s a chance to enjoy an evening together while trying to solve the mystery before dessert.”

Whether planning a couples’ night out or gathering friends for a little Halloween mischief, guests can expect an evening of theatrical suspense, good food and plenty of reasons to eye the room with suspicion. After all, in a speakeasy full of secrets, everyone has something to hide — and someone knows whodunit.

Tickets are $125 per person, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Hastings Main Street. Advance reservations are required.

The Venue is located at 301 N. Main St., Hastings. Purchase tickets or visit catalysttheatre.com for more information.
