Palm Coast, FL – The Al Krier Trail Dedication Ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. beneath the Palm Coast bridge near European Village. On what would have been Al’s 87th birthday, the City of Palm Coast unveiled a dedicated trail to celebrate his profound contributions to the community.

Council Member Theresa Pontieri submitted the request to the City to have the trail named in Al’s memory. Al passed away on December 24, 2022. She spoke at the event prior to the unveiling of the sign and noted that she keeps a photo of Al in the visor of her Jeep to remind her never to lose sight of Al’s efforts.

“Al was the founder and leader of the Committee for Safety on Cimmaron. He often referred to himself as the ‘old man on the bike with his army of volunteers.’ Along with his volunteer coalition, he appeared over and over at City Council meetings to advocate for better safety structures and procedures on the main road into Sailboat Country,” Pontieri said. “Thanks to the persistence of the Committee, the City has commissioned a study to evaluate neighborhood roads for safety improvements, speed limit reduction, traffic signals, and stop signs.”

Al’s son, Joe Krier, attended the ceremony on behalf of his family. He noted that his father’s dedication to improving safety on Cimmaron Drive and throughout his neighborhood was a project he enjoyed working on during the last years of his life.

Two signs were installed at both ends of the trail, one across from Cimmaron Drive and the other at the trail entrance near European Village. These signs serve as a lasting reminder of Al Krier’s unwavering dedication to the City of Palm Coast.

James Hirst, Director of Parks and Recreation, reflected on the ceremony’s success, saying, “The ceremony was a moving tribute to an exceptional advocate for our city. We were thrilled to see the community come together to honor his legacy. Al’s contributions to Palm Coast were immeasurable, and this event allowed us to recognize his commitment to making our community a better place.”

The City of Palm Coast extends its gratitude to all residents who attended the ceremony, making it a memorable and touching event.
