October 20, 2022 – Residents and visitors who use MalaCompra Road to access the beach in The Hammock will encounter some ongoing roadwork through March 2023. Workers will maintain traffic to ensure continuous use, roadside parking, and access to county parks facilities.

“The project started in mid-September and is scheduled to be completed in March 2023,” said County Engineer Faith Alkhatib. “These improvements are anticipated to enhance community and visitor access to State Road A1A, The Hammock shoreline, and existing county facilities.”

The roadwork – just shy of a quarter mile – is grant funded through a Small County Outreach Program (SCOP) construction grant in the amount of $688,853 from the Florida Department of Transportation. The grant covers the costs to apply an asphalt overlay with a new turnaround for about .73 miles of existing roadway, as well as some areas of sidewalk, driveway, curb, and storm drainage pipe replacements along MalaCompra Road.

Addition key elements of the project include the following:

  • Protecting the MalaCompra Channel from construction impacts.
  • Maintaining traffic to ensure continuous roadway use by residents, as well as access to existing county facilities, and parking along MalaCompra Road.
  • Coordinating with the construction of improvements at First Avenue and Osceola Avenue.
  • Improving the existing walkway to comply with current ADA standards.

“As with all construction projects, we ask for your patience,” Alkhatib said. “We know it is inconvenient, but we will do our best to keep the disruption to a minimum.”
