The Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center is set to host master illusionist REZA on January 30. And with most things in the realm of magic there’s more than meets the eye. We get a sneak peek behind the curtain in this week’s Big Five.
1. Tell readers about yourself (what’s your background, hometown, etc.)
ANSWER: I am from Brookings, South Dakota and have spent years traveling and performing for audiences all over the world….and also based in Branson, Missouri where I own a 1,000 seat theatre and perform around 200 shows each year for tourists from all over the country.
2. How did you get into the art of magic?
ANSWER: I first became interested in magic at the age of six after being selected as an on-stage volunteer by a magician at my elementary school. I begged my parents for a magic set for my seventh birthday. Not only did they give me a magic set, they supported my dream from that moment forward and have fueled my passion from a hobby into a career.
3. Who has inspired you most as a magician or illusionist and why?
ANSWER: I’ve been inspired by a lot of different performers, but the ones who really stick with me are the ones who make it feel real and personal. Artists who connect with the audience and tell a story. That’s what I try to bring into my own shows…..something that feels exciting, a little unexpected, and genuinely fun for everyone in the theatre!
4. What can the audience expect from the show at the Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center?
ANSWER: My show is for anyone and everyone of all ages and demographics. We travel all over the world and I also have a residency in the Midwest. We are constantly changing and enhancing the show based on audience feedback and new concepts I create with my team. I am stoked to bring my brand of magic and illusions to the Fitzgerald PAC! I hope each of you are ready for a night you will never forget.
5. What is the most thrilling thing for you about being an illusionist?
ANSWER: For me, it’s that shared moment of total wonder. When a room full of people reacts at the same time (kids, parents, grandparents) it’s a powerful moment. In a world where everyone is distracted, magic brings people back into the moment. Watching that happen, especially in a place I’ve never performed before, is what keeps this exciting for me every single time. I’m thrilled to be with you all!
