Flagler County Receives NEFRC Award in the Area of ‘Public Safety’

December 30, 2024 – Flagler County was notified on Monday that it is the recipient of an Annual Regional Awards for Excellence from the Northeast Florida Regional Council (NEFRC). The honor was awarded for “Public Safety” because the county was presented with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificate of Waiver for Drones Beyond the Line of Sight (BLOS).

“There continues to be engaging and transformational work happening across Northeast Florida. It is an

honor to celebrate those projects and initiatives that enhance local communities in the region,” said Chief Executive Officer Beth Payne in a news release issued by NEFRC. “We look forward to celebrating these accomplishments at the Awards Ceremony on January 9.”

Flagler may well be the first county government in the United States with a Certificate of Waiver that covers: operations beyond the visual line of sight of the remote pilot in command; operations in which a participating Visual Observer (VO) is not able to see the unmanned aircraft; operations over human beings; and, operations over a moving vehicle.

The UAS (drone) Program Division is significant in Flagler County and is used for a variety of essential support tasks: emergency response, infrastructure inspections, and public safety operations. Improving the efficiency and safety of the program helps reduce costs and enhances service delivery across the county.

In total, the newest drone cost $275,000 that includes the drone itself, training, the LiDAR payload (remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure variable distances to earth), and thermal payload (essential for spotting heat signatures not visible by the naked eye). By contrast, Flagler County in the past paid for coastal LiDAR scans – per flight – to the tune of $33,000 for an engineering consultant to fly manned aircraft and between $22,000 and $72,000 to contract with a drone consultant to collect this same data.

All it takes is one or two storms for Flagler County to receive its return on investment. Additionally, the county can swap the payload on the aircraft to then focus on wildfire mitigation or search and rescue missions, including assistance for other agencies within the region.

“Receiving an award like this serves as testament to the efforts made to shape a vibrant and interconnected community, where collaboration is not just a concept but a way of life,” Petito said. “Together, we celebrate the power of working hand-in-hand to build a resilient and thriving Northeast Florida.”

The Northeast Florida Regional Council is an independent, regional government agency serving Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Putnam, Nassau, and St. Johns counties. It provides a regional perspective on economic development, emergency preparedness, resiliency, and community development to enhance the quality of life of Northeast Florida residents.

“Our goal at AdventHealth is to be a preeminent health care system known for whole-person care,” said Audrey Gregory, PhD, East Florida Division president/CEO. “With this aspiration in mind, our sacred responsibility is to grow our services and expand our reach so that more people can experience wholeness in body, mind and spirit.”

Effective Jan. 12, the following CEOs will report to Gregory and lead each region:

Additionally, the hospital has received numerous accolades and national recognitions, including the No. 1 hospital ranking in Volusia County by U.S. News & World Report and a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Before assuming leadership at AdventHealth Daytona Beach, Weis held roles as president/CEO for AdventHealth DeLand and chief operating officer for AdventHealth Daytona Beach.

Prior to joining AdventHealth, he served as vice president of operations and chief operating officer for Adventist Health Ukiah Valley in Northern California, where he provided oversight of operations in the medical center’s ambulatory and acute care areas.

“It’s been a pleasure working with the incredible team at AdventHealth Fish Memorial and supporting the leaders at AdventHealth DeLand,” Brown said. “As I build and strengthen relationships with our north Lake (County) and south Sumter County teams, I look forward to joining them in serving the great communities across our region.”

A search will take place to fill the CEO positions at AdventHealth Daytona Beach and AdventHealth Fish Memorial.

ABOUT THE SHOW

PointeTango is a unique, “one-of-a-kind” dance company directed by choreographer and dancer, Alexander Richardson and created with lead dancer, Erin Scott-Kafadar. By pushing new boundaries in dance, PointeTango combines the intimacy of Argentine tango with the precision of classical ballet, creating a new dance vocabulary that is both intimate and bold.

Pointe-Tango emerged from the question: ‘What happens when classical ballet meets Argentine tango?’ Having trained and worked in both disciplines of classical ballet and Argentine tango extensively, Erin and Alexander challenged themselves to develop a new dance vocabulary of “pointetango” that respects the codes and connection of the Argentine tango “abrazo” (embrace) while searching for new solutions and opportunities to the challenges encountered when transitioning from heels to pointe shoes. PointeTango is the only dance company in the world to dance authentic, improvised Argentine tango on pointe shoes.
