Flagler County Unemployment Rate Jumps to 5.3%

PALM COAST, FL (April 16, 2021) Flagler County’s unemployment rate increased nearly a full percentage point in March 2021 from 4.5% to 5.3%, with 273 jobs being created over the past 30 days.

“Jobs are being created in Flagler County, but we still have many jobs that are going unfilled,” said Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce President Greg Blosé. “I speak with business leaders daily in Flagler County, who have open jobs that are going unfilled. In some cases, nobody is applying for these jobs. Business leaders believe this is because of COVID stimulus and extended unemployment benefits, which may be keeping potential employees on the sidelines.”

In March 2021, Flagler County employment grew from 44,930 to 45,203, an increase of 273 jobs. Meanwhile, the labor force grew from 47,248 in February 2021 to 47,741 in March 2021, an increase of nearly 500 Flagler County residents looking for work.

“Flagler County’s workforce is nearly 48,000 strong, and increase of two thousand from the beginning of the year” Blosé said. “So, people are re-entering the labor force, but we need them to take the next step and apply for open jobs in our community.”

Blosé continued, “Because Flagler County’s population is growing, we must continue to create new jobs to see a meaningful reduction in the unemployment rate. The good news is many of our businesses have recovered from the pandemic enough to offer new jobs, but the response to these open job opportunities in our community has been poor.”

In the past 12 months, Flagler County has lost 967 jobs, mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

April Showers Don’t Deter Flagler Gardeners

Denise Garcia chaired the 8th Annual Spring Festival & Plant Sale hosted by The Garden Club at Palm Coast on Saturday.

Palm Coast, FL (April 17, 2021) – You know the saying, “April showers, bring May flowers”, and there were certainly plenty of both on Saturday as The Garden Club at Palm Coast held their 8th Annual Spring Festival and Plant Sale.

Staged at the Palm Coast Arts Foundation, hearty gardeners were greeted by two dozen vendors on site with everything from low maintenance Florida friendly plants to experts ready to share their best practice knowledge from the Florida Native Plant Society.

Florida Native Plant Society members chat with visitors to the 8th Annual Spring Festival & Plant Sale hosted by The Garden Club at Palm Coast on Saturday.

Trekking through the muddy grounds after a torrential downpour early in the day, festival chair Denise Garcia was grateful for the exhibitors who stuck it out, as they were on hand to receive the business as shoppers continued to roll in throughout the day.

“We get wet and we just keep going. We were completely soaked this morning but we made the decision we were going to follow our weather app and if it says it’s going to stop raining, it will. The traffic has been nonstop.”

“We have some wonderful vendors, two very large plant vendors, an herb vendor, and the garden club is actually selling out of plants, and at the same time we have other groups selling crafts,” said Garcia, who begins planning for the next year’s event two months after the event wraps.

Under the PCAF’s big tent, Propagation Guild chair Jane Villa-Lobos oversaw the purchase of the tender new plants created from clippings and nurtured lovingly by the members. Starting with 400 plants Saturday morning, by mid-day less than 100 were left.

Jane Villa-Lobos oversees the garden club’s propagation guild, offering more than 400 plants for sale during the 8th Annual Spring Festival & Plant Sale hosted by The Garden Club at Palm Coast on Saturday.

“Most of the plants we sell here are from our members and the propagation guild of the garden club,” shared Villa-Lobos. “As soon as the sun comes out, we get lots of people, so I think it’s been a huge success.”

Proceeds from the propagated plant sale benefit the club’s youth scholarship program for college students on an agricultural or environmental track.

Offering tips on care and growth, Will Orser from McCrory’s Bromeliads, stayed busy with brisk sales of the beautifully flowering plants. A crowd favorite, Orser said they love attending plant sales and shows, rain or shine.

“It’s neat to get out and see people, and a lot of people like these plants,” said Orser. “People like the bright colors, the bloom styles are very unique, and they cheer up an area. It’s nice to put someone who likes plants together with a nice plant.”

How Sweet It Is: Community Celebration Welcomes New Tax Collector’s Office

Flagler County Interim General Services Director Mike Dickson and Royce Mitchell do the honors of cutting the ribbon at the Flagler County Tax Collector's new Palm Coast location on April 15, 2021.

Palm Coast, FL (April 15, 2021) – Welcoming hundreds through the door during the afternoon for a look at the new location, Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston didn’t forget those who helped make it happen while pinching pennies to do the work in house, and when the time came, Mike Dickson, Interim General Services Manager for Flagler County, and team member Royce Mitchell were front and center to cut the red ribbon, officially opening the office on Thursday afternoon.

From left Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston, Mike Dickson, Interim General Services Director for Flagler County, Royce Mitchell, Flagler Beach Mayor Suzie Johnston and Flagler County Tax Collector Clerk Shelly Edmonson.

Spurred by the need for additional space after COVID restrictions required social distancing, the new 3,000 sq. foot Palm Coast office located in St. Joe Plaza is not only providing benefits to the county’s residents, it’s a breath of fresh air to anchor businesses in the complex who are already seeing an increase in foot traffic.

On hand to emcee the event, Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen was pleased with the tremendous turnout, and cost savings associated with the new location.

“This is a significant opening because there are a lot of small businesses in St. Joe Plaza and this is going to bring business here,” said Hansen. “It is a remarkable boon to these small businesses and I think it’s exciting.”

“We had the entire buildout of this space done by county employees and it saved us – one example she (Suzanne Johnston) likes to give is they got quoted $8,500 for a counter. We did it for $200. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

The afternoon was staged as a block party style event by HT Production Company, with DJ Vern Shank playing music, a live broadcast on Flagler Radio with Kevin Kane, a dozen tables representing businesses in the St. Joe Plaza complex, a fire truck and a drunk driving simulation courtesy of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Celebrating with Suzanne Johnston was her daughter Suzie Johnston, Mayor of Flagler Beach, and Johnston’s sister Kathy Brown, who provided her signature sour cream pound cakes with strawberries and homemade whipped cream for the celebration.

Credit where credit is due. Top notch baker Kathy Brown sweetens up the day for her sister, Flagler County Tax CollectorSuzanne Johnston by providing her signature sour cream pound cakes for the grand opening celebration on April 15, 2021.

“It is so nice when the different county offices jump in to support us,” shared Johnston, surrounded by fellow Constitutional officers, Flagler County Commissioners, and well-wishers from the community.

“You could register to vote, file for homestead exemption, talk with the county commissioners, adopt a dog from the humane society, lots and lots of people were here, and most importantly, the businesses in St. Joe Plaza were so supportive. They had raffles here, they brought food, had tables set up very nicely,” she said with gratitude.

“To cut the ribbon, the county workers who remodeled it were the ones who cut the ribbon, they put their heart and soul into it as craftsmen, you would be so proud of how this building looks and we truly appreciate that.”

Flagler Health+ Makes Pfizer Vaccine Available to All Over Age 16 on April 23

April 15, 2021 – Flagler Health+ (formerly Flagler Hospital) is bringing the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination to Flagler County for a one-time opportunity for anyone at least 16 years old to be vaccinated on April 23. Appointments are required, as is a return visit for a second dose on May 14.

“The main difference between the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the Moderna vaccine that has been offered in our community since December is that residents aged 16 years old, and older, are eligible to receive this vaccine,” said County Administrator Jerry Cameron. “It is very generous of Flagler Health(+) to provide this service to its neighboring county to the south.”

The hospital system, which has been expanding services in Flagler County, is partnering with Flagler County Fire Rescue, the Palm Coast Fire Department, and Flagler County Emergency Management to conduct this event that will be held at the county’s Emergency Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Boulevard, Building 3, Bunnell (directly behind the domed Government Services Building).

“We are excited about our presence in Flagler,” said Jason Barrett, CEO of Flagler Health+. “And we look forward to many more opportunities to work with the county and its cities to provide the best health care available.”

Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 23, and can be made online at www.FlaglerCounty.org/COVID. Appointments for the second dose of the vaccine to be administered on May 14 will be booked at the same time as the initial appointment.

“Residents 16 years old and older are eligible, but 16- and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by a legal guardian,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord.

Additionally, there are plenty of other vaccination opportunities for those who are at least 18 years old. Links to appointments for Parkview Church, Walmart, Publix, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, CVS, Grace Community Pharmacy, and Florida Department of Health-Flagler locations are also available at www.FlaglerCounty.org/COVID.

The Moderna vaccine is offered at the Florida Department of Health-Flagler (also commonly referred to as the Flagler County Department) locations. In addition to the online appointments, those who do not have email or internet access may call 866-201-1541 (TTY: 833-476-1450).

Residents can also use their cell phones to sign up for text message alerts about vaccine availability and COVID-19 testing opportunities by texting the single word FLAGLERCOVID to the mobile phone number 888-777. To cancel these alerts, reply with the word STOP in the same text message thread.

For now, fully vaccinated people can gather indoors without physical distancing or wearing masks with:

  • Other people who are fully vaccinated
  • Unvaccinated people from one other household, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19

“Until more is known, fully vaccinated people should continue to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart from other people in other settings, like when they are in public or visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households,” according to the CDC website.

Elite Studio Puts the Dazzle in After Hours Networking

Members and guests learn various steps during the Professional Women of Flagler County Elite Networking event at Elite Dance & Travel, courtesy of owner Magdalena Piekarz, on Thursday, April 14, 2021.

Palm Coast, FL – Busy women need a little pampering too, so when Elite Dance & Travel owner Magdalena Piekarz offered to host the April after hours event for the Professional Women of Flagler County, the ladies said “sign me up!”.

Alina Perry-Smith provides headshots for attendees including Flagler Auditorium director Amelia Fulmer during the Professional Women of Flagler County Elite Networking event at Elite Dance & Travel, courtesy of owner Magdalena Piekarz, on Thursday, April 14, 2021.

Joining the award-winning ballroom dance performer and teacher at her studio in Roma Court, ladies who’d just finished a long day at work were eager to shake the stress away with energetic dance lessons and frosty beverages, topped off with something a little extra – a new headshot.

Courtesy of Images by Alina, members came dressed to impress for the photo shoots, and received professional touch ups by Ana Reyes-Outzs before heading in front of the camera.

Life has not always been as perfectly finished as the photos she takes but taking charge of her destiny, Alina Perry-Smith is preparing to live out her own professional dreams, as a photographer. Diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2013, she said it was during chemo and radiation that she had her epiphany.

“Now I’m retiring from education and want to do this full time,” she said, preparing to mark her eighth anniversary of being cancer-free on Saturday. “I still want to teach so I’m hoping to do photography classes for adults.”

Embarking on a new professional journey, she’s helping others reach their full potential by staring out with a great head shot.

“I love networking with women and head shots are critical. They meet your headshot before they meet you,” explained Perry-Smith. “Women are egging each other on, looking spectacular and they’re having fun with it.”

It’s the same vigor and drive that other professional women who are part of the organization possess.

Peeking at her photos after the photo shoot, family law attorney Cynthia Lane was excited about the networking opportunity to meet new people and catch up with colleagues in the elegant surroundings.

Alina Perry-Smith focuses on the head shot for Cynthia Lane during the Professional Women of Flagler County Elite Networking event at Elite Dance & Travel, courtesy of owner Magdalena Piekarz, on Thursday, April 14, 2021.

“I was very excited to come to this in-person event today. It’s been a very long year, a very isolating year but the legal community has not slowed down,” she said. “The screen that I’ve primarily been in front of has been a Zoom screen for my Zoom court hearings, so today being in front of her camera on this green screen was very exciting and very fun, and a good change of pace. I’m excited to see how everything turns out.”

“In-person networking events, any sort of networking with regard to our local community is so vital for our community. We all come from different walks of life, different experiences but we have a shared sense of community of wanting to move our practices, our professionalism and our lives forward in a healthy, positive way and so these types of events and this organization in general is so important for that,” said Lane.

Serving as the organization’s first formal in-person event, PWFC President Danielle Silva appreciated Piekarz opening her business to host.

“It’s a full on networking and dance lesson,” said Silva. “It is amazing. I’m hoping the women meet new people, learn a little bit of dance and have some fun.”

Guests and members mix and mingle during the Professional Women of Flagler County Elite Networking event at Elite Dance & Travel, courtesy of owner Magdalena Piekarz, on Thursday, April 14, 2021.

“I love connecting, I want to be part of the community and the Professional Women of Flagler County is what I relate to,” shared Piekarz.

“I know the ladies, we’ve met on Zoom so far, so it was exciting to meet in person. We need to get together – nothing feels better than the human smile, human interaction, energy and human touch. People are ready to connect.”

The next Professional Women of Flagler County event is set for May 7, 2021 at 8:30 am, hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn, Palm Coast, focusing on workplace wellness. Members $25, Future members $35. Visit www.professionalwomenflagler.org.

Legendary Jazz Artist Linda Cole and Friends Set to Close Community Celebration Series on April 23rd

Palm Coast, Florida – Linda Cole, Flagler County’s resident Queen of Jazz, headlines a special performance celebrating The Flagler Auditorium’s unique mission of creating the ultimate classroom for the arts.  The performance, including a special showcase by two prominent alumni of the high school, is part of the Auditorium’s ongoing Community Celebration Series.  The concert begins at 7 o’clock on April 23, 2021.  For tickets, visit www.flaglerauditorium.org or call 386-437-7547.

Linda Cole, a member of the legendary Nat King Cole family, has had a long and celebrated career as a master of musical genres including jazz, gospel, country, and pop.  Her performances include credits with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Temptations, Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyra, David Benoit, and the County Basie Orchestra.  Local audiences know her for her appearances with the Orlando Jazz Orchestra, the Daytona Beach Concert Band, and the Space Coast Symphony Jazz Orchestra.  She has long been a champion of music education, as well as an educator herself, and will be introducing some of Flagler’s most accomplished alumni to the concert audience.  One critic recently wrote, “Her beautifully crafted performances are nothing short of wonderful.  She has a mesmerizing voice that consistently leaves audiences wanting more.”

Accompanying Ms. Cole will be the Abe Alam Trio.  Himself a graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School, Alam is a professor at Full Sail University in Central Florida.  A professional jazz guitarist, music director, and educator, he has performed with Ira Sullivan, Kurt Elling, Jason Marsalis, Ingrid Jenson, Dave Steinmeyer, and many more nationally acclaimed musicians.

The program will open with vocalist Jill Vanderoef and pianist Nicole Tilton Cross, both Flagler Palm Coast High School alumni.  They will offer a special performance on the same stage that gave them their start in high school.  Says Flagler Auditorium Director Amelia Fulmer “Nicole and Jill have performed all over the world, but while the pandemic has created a pause in their careers, it has also created an opportunity for our community to see them perform here as ‘Stars’ on the Flagler Auditorium stage.”

Says Director Fulmer, “A member of the Flagler Auditorium governing board for many years, Linda Cole has served on the board’s scholarship community for ten years.  This show allows the community to see how far those scholarship recipients have taken their talent and ability.  It is fitting to have Miss Cole present this concert with these talented young people.”

In accordance with CDC guidelines, the Auditorium audience will be at 25% capacity.  Health screening, temperature checks, and face coverings are required.  The Auditorium employs a newly installed state-of-the-art circulating clean air system utilizing Global Plasma Technology.
