I would like to share two points of career counsel.

First, if you are unappreciated by dysfunctional leadership and there are no signs of potential positive change, do not wait but leave as quickly as possible.

At one point in my career, I was with a company and I was their #1 relationship builder and revenue producer. I was one of the most hardworking, successful, and qualified individuals to ever be employed there. Due to loyalty to employees and customers, I stayed longer than I should have. Eventually, the leadership was fired but that came years too late.

My point is do not waste precious and limited time of your life and career. When it’s clear that the wrong people are in charge, take advantage of being a talented individual of integrity and access all the excellent professional opportunities which you will have. My career soared after leaving the dysfunction. Never stay in a burning building out of strong sense of loyalty, care, and concern for others who may be there – they need to make their own decisions and you need to make yours.

Secondly, the other day, a fellow professional well known in my field was helping a client succeed. Now, I could have viewed this individual as competition. After all he does what I do and he was helping a client who could have been mine. What did I do? I attended his event to support his success. I actually assisted in making sure he looked great with his client.

So how does this work? We send each other clients, say good things about each other since they are well deserved, and assist each other with challenges and opportunities. Here’s the lesson: the people at the top of their profession are collaborating not competing. For example, the good lawyers in town are always sending each other business. Collaboration creates and sustains success.

I hope these lessons help.
