Landing a prestigious position with Florida House Speaker-designate Paul Renner, Flagler Tiger Bay Club Young Tiger Darryl Boyer shares how his willingness to speak up and seize an opportunity paid off.

How did you become involved with Flagler Tiger Bay Club?

-While I was away in college, my mom called me one day and said that there was this new organization called, Tiger Bay Club that she thought I would be interested in joining. I did some research and joined in August 2020. Shout out to Ms. Orr who helps me renew my membership each year.

You made a bold move by asking for a job openly when introducing yourself during a meeting. How did you approach Rep. Renner to make “the ask”?

-My grandfather once told me, “Nothing ventured…nothing gained!” At that moment that quote motivated me to approach Rep. Renner. I had previously worked for our State House during the 2022 legislative session and loved every moment of each day and was inspired by each person I met. Expressing my passion for public service was in hopes to help him service our community and state.

What connections or relationships have you made during your attendance at Flagler Tiger Bay Club meetings that helped facilitate the opportunity with Rep. Renner?

-Growing up I’ve admired many of the community leaders that so happen to be members. Now, to be seated at the same table with them to build a friendship is monumental. Overall, Tiger Bay has taught me, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

How does this position help further your career goals?

-I serve as Representative Renner’s Travel Aide. My day-to-day requires me to get him to and from events on time while also accompanying him at each event. I look at this opportunity as a foot in the door to learn and build leadership skills. Ultimately, I will be able to bring my experiences back to my community to provide stronger service.

What advice would you give to other students about professional networking opportunities like being part of the Flagler Tiger Bay Club?

-We live in a great community and state that truly advocates for young perspectives and leadership. Take advantage of the many great resources and leaders that we are fortunate to have.
