DELAND, Fla. – From Oct. 27 to Nov. 4, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and partners across Florida are celebrating the eighth annual Mobility Week to encourage Floridians to make safe multimodal transportation choices. In Central Florida, partners will host events and offer special promotions to encourage locals to explore new and efficient transportation options.
“We’re excited to partner with dozens of Central Florida organizations during Mobility Week and provide our community with information about the many transportation options available,” said FDOT District 5 Secretary John E. Tyler. “We invite everyone to try a new form of transportation while creating new safer habits on our roadways.”
More than 50 events are scheduled to take place in Central Florida as part of Mobility Week. Central Floridians can get involved in several ways, including:
Try Transit Thursday. Transit agencies like LYNX, SunRail, Space Coast Area Transit, SunTran and LakeXpress are offering free rides on Nov. 2 for Try Transit Thursday – a day dedicated to encouraging Central Floridians to try public transportation. Participants can take transit to work, a fun destination, or to one of Mobility Week’s in-person events. Votran will also celebrate rider appreciation on Nov. 2 through free safety giveaways.
Ride Roll Stroll Challenge. This year’s statewide multimodal challenge, Ride Roll Stroll, will take place from Oct. 27 through Nov. 30. Participants can record their walking, biking, carpool, and public transit trips to earn points, which can later be redeemed for rewards. Bike Lane Contest. Local elementary school students from several schools are invited to design their own bike lane icon with the chance of having it installed in front of their school. The contest is meant to promote walking and bicycling safety throughout Central Florida.
Virtual Conference Center. Those who will not be able to make it to an in-person event but would still like to participate can visit the Mobility Week Virtual Conference Center at https://bit.ly/MobilityWeekVirtualRoom. Visitors can learn about innovative programs and projects throughout the state.
Since the start of Mobility Week in 2016, FDOT has partnered with more than 400 organizations, participated in over 800 events, provided over 400,000 free transit rides, encouraged the community to ride 600,000 miles by bike, and distributed over 300,000 safety items, such as helmets and bicycle lights.
