What Matters Most – Retiring the Right Way

It’s wonderful when members of a team see a now retired leader who made a very positive difference in their lives and careers. You’ll see hugs, handshakes, and expressions of appreciation from all. Everyone remembers him or her for always doing the right thing even when it was not easy to do.

Conversely, few things are as awkward to watch as a retired leader known for unethical behavior visiting the organization and no one greets him or her with any real respect, admiration, or gratitude. They can’t wait until he or she leaves.

Your career will end but your reputation is forever. People will clap for one of two reasons at your retirement. Successful leaders of character are applauded for the right one.

Seek first to retire with a solid and enduring reputation for integrity. That’s the real definition of success and you’ll be glad you retired with this reputation.
