What’s Happening Now
Post-storm restoration work continued this past week (Dec. 5-Dec. 9) within the work zones along State Road (S.R.) A1A in Flagler and Volusia Counties. Last week’s efforts were primarily focused in the south work zone between Sunny Beach Drive and Wisteria Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea. The contractors worked diligently for extended hours while Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) staff and consultant engineers monitored roadway conditions following strong currents from recent high tides. Last week, crews replenished the dunes with 2,376 cubic yards of sand in areas of the south work zone that suffered significant erosion. Crews also placed 1,827 tons of rock in the south work zone to further protect the roadway from damage.
Rock placement also continued last week in the north work zone along S.R. A1A between South 28th Street and South 7th Street in Flagler Beach. Crews placed 2,352 tons of rock in the north work zone between Dec. 5 and Dec. 9.
North Zone: South 28th Street to South 7th Street in Flagler Beach
- 5,795 cubic yards of sand have been placed along S.R. A1A in this area to date.
- 11,410 tons of combined coquina and granite rock revetment have been placed along S.R. A1A in this area to date.
Central Zone: High Bridge Road in Ormond Beach to South Central Avenue in Flagler Beach
- 18,300 cubic yards of sand have been placed along S.R. A1A in this area to date.
South Zone: Wisteria Drive to Sunny Beach Drive in Ormond Beach
- 12,407 cubic yards of sand have been placed along S.R. A1A in this area to date.
- 1,827 tons of coquina rock revetment have been placed along S.R. A1A in this area to date.
The FDOT is continuously assessing the conditions along State Road A1A and responding to areas of need as they arise to ensure continued mobility for the traveling public along this scenic highway. Work will continue in the three work zones over the next several weeks. Motorists and pedestrians can continue to expect intermittent lane closures as needed for this work.
S.R. A1A Resiliency Plan Progress Update
Engineers working with the Florida Department of Transportation have been on site along S.R. A1A in Flagler and Volusia counties to assess current conditions over the last few weeks and to develop a list of potential solutions. Additionally, the project team reviewed previous feasibility studies performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and FDOT to examine what solutions had been considered in the past.
The project team plans to have an initial list of alternatives, along with the initial evaluation matrix, ready for internal review by the Strike Team later this month. Community listening sessions are anticipated in January to share the potential options with the public.
