Area’s Top Oral & Facial Surgical Practice Only One in Florida Designated as a “Diamond Center of Excellence”

Daytona Beach, FL – The region’s top oral and facial surgical practice becomes the only one to reach “Diamond” status for its use of the Yomi® Robotic System in Florida. Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates is the only practice in Volusia and Flagler Counties using Yomi and now it’s being listed as a Yomi Diamond Center of Excellence. Two of its doctors are also designated as Yomi Platinum and Diamond Doctors of Excellence.

Yomi is the first and only FDA-cleared system for robotic-guided dental surgery in the United States. It allows the surgeons to use a CT scan of the patient to create a 3-D image and virtually plan the implant surgery. The computerized navigational system then gives the dental surgeons real-time visual and audio feedback during surgery and provides physical cues that guide the surgeon’s hand to the precise angle and location for the planned dental implant.

To be designated as a Yomi Diamond Center of Excellence, Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates’ doctors John Akers, D.D.S.; Roger Thayer, D.M.D., M.A., F.A.C.S.; and Bradley Pinker, D.D.S., M.D. had to meet certain criteria:

  • Provide patients with education about the Yomi Robotic System prior to the dental procedure
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise by performing a minimum of 175 dental implants annually using the Yomi Robotic System
  • Must have a Robotic Coordinator or Robotic Director responsible for implementing the robotics program that follows best clinical practices in accordance with Yomi training

Dr. Thayer was designated a Yomi Platinum Doctor of Excellence, meaning he has performed at least 100 dental implants annually, including anterior, posterior, and bilateral cases, plus a 3+ implant case all using Yomi.

Dr. Pinker was designated a Yomi Diamond Doctor of Excellence. For this achievement he had to perform a minimum of 125 dental implants annually using Yomi, as well as perform the cases of a Platinum level, along with a dual partial arch case and single full arch case.

The oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates believe everyone deserves a beautiful smile, and that’s why they’ve been perfecting the dental implant process with Yomi since April 2019.

“For us, it’s about helping people live their best lives, because of that we have a long-standing history of making sure all of our patients receive the highest quality of care with the latest technology available,” said Dr. Akers. “With more than 75 years of combined experience, our expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, we are proud to be recognized for our achievements.”

AdventHealth Daytona Beach Pediatric Emergency Room, Inpatient Unit Celebrate 5th ‘Birthday’

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 11, 2022 — Mary Scheid was visiting Central Florida from her home in Virginia, taking care of her grandchildren for the Labor Day weekend, when she noticed her grandson was having trouble breathing.

“I’m a respiratory therapist, and I don’t fool around with stuff like this,” Scheid said, noting that 2-year-old Colton has asthma and wears a pacemaker because of an unrelated heart condition.

Scheid was advised to bring Colton to the pediatric emergency room at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.

“I walked in and right away the tech came up and helped me, took his vitals and wheeled him into a room,” Scheid said. “The whole team was on him, giving him medicine and asking the right questions.”

The team was able to stabilize Colton, while making both him and Scheid feel at ease.

“At first he wouldn’t wear the oxygen mask; he was scared and fighting me,” she recalled. “They told me to sit on the stretcher with him, so I did. And I just held him and he felt safe.”

Today Colton is doing well, and Scheid remains grateful for his care team.

“The nurse was so sweet; she gave Colton and his little sister Olivia a little toy,” she said. “And they both still play with them in the bathtub.”

Colton is one of more than 96,000 children to be treated in the pediatric ER, which is part of the AdventHealth for Children care network, since the beginning of 2021. As well as nurses, the ER team includes two ER physicians board certified in pediatrics, a nurse practitioner, a physician’s assistant, and Child Life specialists, who use play to help kids navigate their care experience. And having pediatric hospitalists on staff in the hospital’s inpatient pediatric unit means children who once would have been transferred can stay right in Daytona Beach for inpatient treatment.

The two sister units recently celebrated their fifth anniversary with a “birthday” party. Team members and patients celebrated with local mascots Shelldon from the Daytona Tortugas and Ernie the Eagle from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Parents like to have pediatric nurses taking care of their kids from an expertise point of view,” said assistant nurse manager Sarah Roberts, who treated Colton and has been working on the unit since its opening in 2017. “We bring patients back to a room and triage, rather than triaging in the lobby, so the nurse is having that interaction from the outset, and that’s an important part of the patient experience.”

Hospital leadership joined their team for the birthday celebration, and reflected on how the units have served the community.

“We know how important it is to offer convenient care that’s close to home,” said AdventHealth Daytona Beach CEO Ed Noseworthy. “That’s why we are so proud to have this pediatric ER and inpatient unit right here in Daytona Beach, to take care of children and their families all over east Volusia County.”

For Roberts, taking care of Colton was just what she does.

“One of my favorite parts of the job is to see a child who’s sick, and then you’re able to turn them around and you see them skipping out the door,” she said. “It’s so rewarding.”

A Woman Found Dead, Apparently Beaten by Another Resident in Nursing Home

A homicide investigation is underway after deputies responded to a call around 2 a.m. at the Gold Choice Assisted Living & Memory Care facility on N. Old Kings Road, Palm Coast. Governor DeSantis Honors Florida’s Police Force and Their Families During National Police Week

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Beginning Wednesday, May 11, 2022 – Tuesday, May 17, 2022, Governor Ron DeSantis will honor the men and women of Florida’s police force by lighting the Florida Historic Capitol blue in recognition of National Police Week. National Police Week recognizes those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our great state and pays special recognition to the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“In Florida, we back the blue,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “While some states talk about defunding the police, we fund the police and then some because we respect the work they do to keep all of us safe. This week, we honor the men, women, and their families who have dedicated their lives to protecting our communities.”
On April 1, Governor DeSantis signed HB 3, the strongest law enforcement recruitment and support initiative in the nation, into law. This legislation:
  • Provides signing bonuses of up to $5,000 to newly employed law enforcement officers in Florida through the creation of the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program.
  • Covers tuition, fees, and up to $1,000 of eligible education expenses for trainees enrolled in a law enforcement officer basic recruit training program through the creation of the Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program.
  • Offers a reimbursement program to pay for up to $1,000 of eligible equivalency training costs for certified law enforcement officers who relocate to Florida or members of the special operations forces who become full-time law enforcement officers in Florida.
  • Makes dependent children of law enforcement officers eligible to receive a Family Empowerment Scholarship to attend private schools.
  • Provides law enforcement officers who adopt a child from within the state child welfare system with a $10,000 benefit or a $25,000 benefit for adopting a child with special needs.

FCSO: RTCC Supervisor Nikki North Selected as Vice President of the National Real Time Crime Center Association

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) Leadership Team attended the Inaugural Real-Time Symposium last week in California, where RTCC Supervisor Nikki North made a presentation on how to develop an RTCC unit. During the conference, Supervisor North was announced as the Vice President of the National Real Time Crime Center Association.

North Presentation

Supervisor North, alongside FCSO’s Commander Joe Barile, both participated in panels focusing on technological, foundational, analytical and collaborate topics in an effort to bring new strategies to crime centers across the country.

“This event was much needed in the world of growing technology,” Supervisor North said. “There are new crime centers popping up all the time, so being a part of our Real Time Crime Center from its origins allowed me to speak to those who are just starting out and it was a great networking opportunity as well.”

Hosted by the Elk Grove Police Department’s RTCC in Elk Grove, CA, FCSO’s team took part in seeing, sharing, learning and comparing practices being utilized in RTCC’s across the country. The four daylong conference brought together 42 agencies from around the nation to discuss success stories, learn about innovative and cutting edge technology, and the best practices for building, implementing and efficiently running a real-time crime center. Crime and intelligence analysts received a first-hand look at integration into real-time operations while learning about important tools that could be used in FCSO’s RTCC to help keep our community safer.

“This kind of educational opportunity allows us to better serve our community,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Our crime analysts and RTCC have played an important role in reducing crime, quickly solving crimes, and preventing crimes of opportunity since we use the latest technology. I’m proud of Supervisor North’s dedication and being selected as the Vice President of the National Real Time Crime Center Association. It is a great honor for her and our agency and we are proud to have her as part of our team.”

The National Real Time Crime Center Association was recently established and announced at the Symposium. The goal of the association is to become a collaborative advocacy and information group for all real time crime centers to interact with, use as a resource for best practices and equipment reviews, and be the foundation of suggested policies and procedures for efficient real time crime center operations. The Board of Directors consists of members from various states across the country.

Leadership Lessons with Dr. Saviak: Driving Success Through Change

What Can Explain Why Some Organizations Make the Changes They Need to Make When They Need to Make Them?

During a class discussion years ago, a student who is a successful executive offered this predictive principle for which examples abound:  The rate of innovation in an organization is inversely related to the length and level of their success. The company which has enjoyed decades of dominance in a market is more likely to become complacent and fail to continuously innovate when needed.

Maintenance of the status quo becomes the priority and continued success is assumed. Complacency, arrogance, and a false belief that perpetual victory is assured thwarts necessary change and positive progress. In some cases, it either produces significant underperformance or extinction.

It seems to universally apply across organizations in all three sectors (public, private, non-profit). In the 21st century where innovation must be the constant for survival, this discussion becomes critical.

Bigger may not be better. Longer success may mean a greater probability to fail. So why do organizations innovate or fail to do so? Once again, leadership and culture govern.
